Thank you Spyware Dr. I've been there and done that one too and unfortunately that doesn't do the trick either. Whatever this is, it's only with this laptop. Everything else works flawlessly but no way with the "reopen the last session" show up un-greyed.

No policy group here - this is a personal computer. Also, I'm still waiting for Steve to reply as to whether his "reopen the last session" is greyed out on his system ...

I don't know about Steve's system (I would guess 99% no, it isn't), but its working fine on my system.

You never did try safe mode...

It has been reported that some anti-virus software interferes with this function.

Never did try safe mode - not sure what to do even if I found there it did work. Maybe you could give an answer to that.
Also, I've completely uninstalled Norton 360 and had it off the system for nearly a month to see if that was making Windows 8 hang sometimes on restart. That was not Norton's fault on that one either.
I realize the problem lies within this system. And if it cannot be overcome, there's other ways for me to get my tabs back.
Tell me what you think of this idea - in Internet Options and on the Homepage, I'm going to try "about:tabs" without the quotes.
I've found this suggestion on another forum. I've yet to try it.

Process of elimination...one of the best ways to troubleshoot issues like this. If it would work in save mode it would tell us that something is loading in normal mode that causes it. That'll then probably turn out to be a driver or shell extension of some sort.

I think nothing of that idea. What's that suppose to do?

Did you try Tools\Internet Options\General\Tabs. Change the way webpages are displayed in tabs, then choosing The new webpage or A blank page.

Arie - booted into Safe Mode and found the same problem. The "reopen last session" is still greyed out even there.
IJ50 - your suggestion changes nothing. Thanks for that just the same!

Here's the site where I got the idea of putting the "about:blanks" --- scroll down to IE10 - let me know what you think. Maybe I missed something there!

You can try using that method to open your last browsing session and see if it works. I am out of ideas on how to fix this issue so there is no harm in trying the method that you found.

The "about:blanks" leaves everything blank!!! In other words, it does absolutely zilch!!! There are four things that are blanked out under Tools - that being "Fix Connection Problems" / "Reopen Last Browsing Session" / "Compatibility View" and for the encore, "Subscribe To This Feed" ........... TAAA DAAAAAA!!!!

With the exception of the greyed out Reopen last browsing session, that's all normal.

I think we are at the point where we agree that we won't find the solution to your problem.
