    Pete, thanks for the link to the Start Up Control applet. I tried again this morning and got the same reply "File can`t be read ". Hmm. Is it something I`m doing or not doing?

    Glad to hear you sorted the problem - shame we didn't get to the root of it :)

    Tried that link again just now - downloaded no problem.
    At what stage do you get 'File can't be read'?

    If it's a download problem email me and I'll send the file ~ 60k

    No ideas - not come across that one before.

    The offer remains open, but I need an email address.

    Well, at least your problem's fixed. You gotta' watch them popup's and don't get mouse crazy in the process. Although some servers have gone to extreme means to make these as difficult as possible and in some cases down right dangerous.

    How about a more dirrect link to the zipped file for Startup Control:
    http://www.mlin.net/files/StartupCPL.zip

    Does this happen on all downloads you attempt?

    ==========
    Thanks for taking the time to update your post with the final outcome and the fix that worked for you.

    Thanks Ann, and others on this list, for all your help and patience. Good people. It wasn`t a pop-up but a stationary ad and the click was all my own work! It does seem that the XP pop-up stopper works very effectvely.
    Thanks also for the link and, no, it doesn't happen as a rule. In fact, I can't remember when it happened before. At least, not twice in a row.
