    Hi guys

I have been using Teamviewer to access another pc remotely but now wants to goes hands on to to do it using the windows.OS remote access facility.

I sort of understand the significance & issues relating to i) full computer name, ii) the allowed user & its password for remote access, iii) firewall exclusion, iv) sleep / hibernation Never and v) internet connection existence.

    Some questions
    1. Do i use the PUBLIC ip address of the remote pc i want to access OR can i just use \\remotePC-fullName (i am sure the latter is not unique)
    2. If the allowed remote user is not given a password in PC-remote, does it mean that if a person has the remotePC-fullname or its IPaddress and the userID, he can then log into this PC-remote.
    3. Is there anything that i miss?

    Thanks in advance.

You'll have to use the other comp's public (WAN) IP address to connect to it.

Note: If that other computer connects to the Internet via a router then the router may need to use port-forwarding. The port forward rule on the remote router would be like so:
    Application: RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol)
    Protocol: Both (UDP/TCP)
From Port: 3389 (this is opened by enabling RDP on your computer)
IP Address: 192.168.x.x (LAN IP of computer)
To Port: 3389 (this is opened by enabling RDP on computer connected to this router)

ALWAYS use a very very strong password for RDP else anybody will be able to connect and take control of the computer. When using RDP the credentials do not change.

Report back and tell us how it goes, then mark this thread as resolved if all good.

In the first pic those settings are fine.
In second pic of router, it must be the router that the comp you want to access is connected to. What brand & model router is it?

Tony the router is DLink DSL-2750E, the router that i want to access to, right duke. Firmware version is SEA_1.07 if it is any good for you to pinpoint.

By the way i love the new surface of the website, so to celebrate its transformation, i put in my logo to join the bandwagon. The forum software is from XenoForo, is it free?
    Michael.

I use Teamviewer quite frequently to correct problems my older brother has with his computers.
What is the difference for access to the remote comp using Windows Remote Access?
With Teamviewer I have Downloaded software, Uninstalled Programs/Software, sent emails etc. all from my comp 200Kms away.

RDP and Teamviewer do the same things, except Teamviewer has more built in functions in its top menu. Also, RDP is a direct connection to the other comp where as Teamviewer passes through Teamviewer servers en route.

Thanks Tony for the link, just digging it, very busy recently. But router is DSL-2750E (not B)
Can't move yet as it ask for what services to select.

    I will try following
    Service: Domain Name Server
Protocol: TCP . UDP on separte line
Server IP Address(Host Name): the internal ip of the pc i want to target eg 192.168.1.xx.
    All 4 ports: 3389

There is also a remote ip to fill but don't know what

I search the web for manual for E but still no solution yet. Based on your lead i will try to find how too.

If the service named Remote Desktop in not in the list of selectable services then create a custom service called RDP. The name doesn't matter at all. The name is only for YOUR benefit. One line for TCP, one line for UDP. Same info on both lines.

Also, on the comp connected to the dlink, set its LAN IP to a static IP. That way the port forwarding won't break when the comp's dynamic IP changes.

    Static IP:
Network & Sharing Center > on left Change adapter settings > rt click adapter > select Properties > double click TCP IP4 Internet Protocol > Use the following IP address > 192.168.x.50 > Subnet: 255.255.255.0 > Gateway: 192.168.x.1 (same as router IP) > Use following DNS: 192.268.x.1 (same as router)
