As the title states... I had to reload my XP on my desktop. It will automatically detect the printer and everything else is working fine. Mouse, keyboard, monitor. I know my modem is working because I'm using my laptop through it to be on here. Problem is that it won't detect the modem when I plug it in. The modem is a 2wire 2701 plugged into the ethernet card. Works fine for the laptop but not at all for the desktop. The folks at Embarq tell me it's a plug and play device so no CD available. Any ideas, O great 'puter gurus?;)

Hi catnip1970, Welcome to Windows BBS :D

As you've gathered your modem is not the problem, it's your network card :(

Can you post details of your motherboard (NIC is probably onboard) or if seperate your NIC (Network Interface Card) model?

As best I can gather it's a broadcom 4401 series chip set. I attempted to download the drivers from the broadcom site but the system won't let me install it as it's a .sys suffix.

What I see in my device manager/ethernet controller properties window for hardware Ids is:
pci\ven_14e4&dev_4401&subsys and it continues on from there but ya'll get the picture.

As I was digging around I couldn't find the tab for network adapters. I attempted to load adapter drivers and the computer gave me an error "Cannot install drivers. No Intel(r) adapters are present in this computer.

Thanks, Arie, I'll get to that first chance I get. I just wanted to post to let ya'll know that I was able to get it up and running again by going to the Dell site and entering my service tag number then down loading my drivers from there. Worked fine. Thank goodness I have a laptop with a dvd burner for transferring the files over.

Now, to dig around the site here to see what other cool stuff I can geek up with. ;)
