    Hello:
On a friend's win 98se computer, as it starts up, there appears on screEn a long dissertation about Registry/System INI being missing or deleted, and if you no longer use this >>>>>>>>>>
it does boot to desktop, so it works.....
How important is INI file ?????
Do we need to replace this file ??
    How do that ????
Can we get rid of this annoying message??

Start > Run > MSCONFIG > Startup tab > look for something there that references the file in question and uncheck it.

    MIR11,

Is your caps lock fubar? ;)

Read the message again, you'll see it's not the INI file that's missing but a file that's referenced inside it.

If you post the FULL/EXACT message we will be able to help.

FUBAR -> Effed Up Beyond All Recognition (No need to shout ;))

When you have a chance post the message, most likely it's a driver that's been uninstalled incorrectly and just needs tidying up. In the meantime there's no harm in using the computer other than that annoying startup error.

    Registry/ System INI file

    Dear Wildfire:
(No need to shout ) This obviouasly refers to my use of caps.
    1. i never subscribed to that theory/belief
    2. Well, i think they are easier to read
    3. if writing by hand, i can not make those lower case letters unless i write in script(longhand)
3a. in school i could not cheat because i could not whisper. (yet i am not loud and boisterous)
    4. Street signs and speed limit signs here in jolly old USA are CAPS
5.Car names are in caps,BUICK,DODGE,VW,RR,LAND ROVER,MACK TRUCKS,( except Ford which is script. some Car/Automobile models are in caps.GRAND CARAVAN
    6. i do not know how it is in your country.(street signs, etc)
7some of the e~mails i get are very small regardless of type/font and hard for us "old fogies" to read.
8.Therefore i do not consider CAPS as Shouting
    9. in Outlook Express i can use 8pt.,10,12,14,18,24 or 36.
so they are 8 barely audible,10 whispering.12 above a whisper ,14 normal,18 one step above normal,24 hollering,36 too loud to understand????!!!!!!
I respect your opinion and trust you respect mine.
    Best Regards
    MIR11{always in Caps}

    1. It's one of those things that are common, i.e. the norm. Read up on netiquette

    2. The opposite is true, it is much harder to read.

    3. We're not writhing by hand here

    4 + 5 + 6 + 7. What has that got to do with netiquette?

    8. Not to be rude, but social conventions 'dictate' netiquette, and guidelines are even written down in an RFC: rfc1855

    9. Font size has nothing to do with it.

hmmm. So you don't want to play nice with others?

How about when you take time out of your busy schedule to help other people you type in caps....But when asking for help you don't;)

    How does that sound?

That appears to be a file for Motorola modem, and if you no longer use it, there is a simple fix for this. It involves editing the registry.
Go to Start\Run, type in REGEDIT and press Enter.
In the left pane, navigate to this folder.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD

Expand that folder, you should find a folder named 'motvcd'. Delete that folder.
Your message should go away on the next boot.

    Dear markp62

Not sure what modem in it, The "puter is a friends, it is so slow booting- up that it does not need any unnecessary stuff.
That probably would do it. will print this and do next time there
    Thanks

two posts ago you said "Expand that folder, you should find a folder named 'motvcd'. Delete that folder.
Your message should go away on the next boot "

Question, will only the message go away??
The "puter is 3 miles away , i was playing with it Saturday, and am pretty sure that modem is only one in it, so must be the being used

Question, will only the message go away??
    Yes.

If there is a modem on the computer, and it is working, I question this missing file is a part of it's drivers. However, I would see if you can find that file, it should be located in the C:\Windows\System folder.
The message is appearing because windows is trying to load a VXD file named 'motvcd.vxd" and it isn't being found.
It is being called up by the Key {HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\motvcd}. By deleting the Key, the file will no longer be looked for.

What you may want to do is highlight the key and Export it first (on the menu, File\Export), then delete the Key. Makes it easier to put back this way.
