Is there a way to make a start up process start with a delay of say 30 seconds via the registry? I tried software but none of them work with win 7 beta.

    thanks

You mean like click on an icon and then have it wait 30 seconds before it does anything? If so - have to ask why you'd want to do that?

Most likely not. AFAIK its not something Windows supports (that's why the need for 3rd party software to do it).

Is there a way to have the start up programs start in a certain order?

In XP, one of the last startup items to process is a scheduled task, and it might be the same with Win7. Try starting the program that way and see if it gives enough of a delay to suit you.

I haven't tested yet (but will try to soon), but there is a utility that when run from a batch will 'sleep' for a specified amount of time. Used in conjuction with a batch run from a registry startup entry, it's possible to delay the automatic starting of an application.

Also in XP, the following 2 startup locations load just prior to scheduled tasks, in the order shown.

    \All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
    \YourUserAccount\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Again, if it applies to Win7 or not I don't yet know. Items in those locations load alphanumerically, meaning help.exe will load before me.exe
You can generally rename most any executable and still run it as long as you call it by name, eg; calc.exe can be renamed zzzz.exe and will start the calculator by entering zzzz.exe in the Run dialog or calling zzzz.exe via a startup location. (Note - calc.exe is protected by Windows File Protection and if renamed will be replaced with a fresh copy of calc.exe from the dllcache - you will not be able to change the renamed copy back to calc.exe)

The start up sequence is the same in XP, Vista and Win7:

    1.HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\BootExecute
    2.Services are started
3.User may enter a password to logon to the system
    4.HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\UserInit
    5.HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell (Explorer.exe only)
Programs for ALL USERS start next:
    6.HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
    7.HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    8.HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
    9.HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunEx
Programs for CURRENT USER start next:
    10.HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
    11.HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    12.HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
    13.HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunEx
14.Programs in STARTUP FOLDER(S) are started last of all
