I want to register a domain name and set up a web site strictly for personal use (for my family). Which is the best registrar/hosting service to use?

There are many good Web hosts that can provide domain registration and hosting for a fair price. It all depends on what you want to do with the site. Shared hosting is cheapest and will suffice for a personal site.

I have serveral sites at http://www.ezhoster.com. Been using them for almost 10 years. Support is fast and genuine when needed. It costs about 80 bucks/year for registration and hosting, well worth it.

I also have several clients at GoDaddy, but Godaddy has resorted to some unfair practices of late. For example, I had set these clients' accounts to notify me when it is time for renewel, but GoDaddy changed my settings and auto-billed the clients' credit cards. It took several phone calls and a week to get GoDaddy to issue refunds on the charges. Needless to say, my clients are no longer at GoDaddy!

On the other hand, your ISP probably provides free Web space where you can setup a personal site. Features such as PHP and other server side scripting are usualy not available, and some ISPs don't allow the association of a domain name with the site. But it may suffice for a personal site. The URL would be something like: wwwdotisp.com/username

Have you checked with your ISP. They have FREE web hosting for their customers. I have used a couple of different ISP's that I have had over the years and had no problems.

Roadrunner is my ISP. I'm not sure what they offer but will look into it. I just want to set up a personal family site for information and pics, etc so the rest of the family across the country can stop by.

Since nobody else has offered any further suggestions, allow me.

GoDaddy is the most popular, but I find their advertising offensive, and there are numerous reports (true or not, I don't know) of them playing switeroo when you ask them if a domain is available (in order to charge you more money).

If I had to register my domain again, I'd do just what I did before--use Google Checkout to register a domain via Enom (when I did this over a year ago, I had the choice between GoDaddy and Enom--not sure who google refers you to now)--for $10/yr. The annual fee is paid automatically so I never have to worry about it expiring.

It was a bit trying, to get Enom to point to my hosted site (they insisted Google do my tech support)--but with a bit of clicking and reading I figured out how to do this. I have my site hosted with www.gracenet.org . They have a nice Megabyte Mania plan that is great for a site like mine (not much traffic).

Wow. One could go batty trying to decide on a registrar and host.

TonyT, thanks for the tip on GoDaddy. They are the only ones I've seen advertising on TV - sounds like a good deal but all I've read on the Internet contradicts that.

Paul, thanks for the info and the link.

I still have a lot of checking and shopping to do. It has been many years since I've done any web development. I need to re-hone my skills before I drop something out there for the world to see.
