I have re-installed XP on my pc as it was running slow. I have yet to install the service packs. First I want to connect to the internet but my pc cannot see the hard wired router. The router is fine and is serving two other pcs as well. The router people suggest that the ethernet drivers are not installed - could this be and how can I check. Any other advice or suggestions welcome

Hi whealie, welcome to WindowsBBS :D

Yes missing network/ethernet drivers is a likely cause for your problems...

It would help if we knew a little more about your system, please click here and follow all the instructions.

You didn't follow the instructions, so no details are showing.

It is not for nothing the following is listed in red on that page:

    Don't skip the step below!

Apologies for not following the instructions. I did try. The machine I am posting about is not this one so it is not as straightforward as I'd hoped. How do you suggest I proceed. And does this actually prevent me getting an answer to the question I have?
    Cheers

After a re-install with format you need to install all the mobo drivers - chipset, audio, network (as Wilfdire posted), etc.

Log onto the mobo manufacturer's web site and put your mobo model into the search box or whatever.

Edit: Not having your system details will not preclude you from continuing this or any other thread, As this is not your main PC a few details in a post here would help.

I will add details later but in the meantime the " install mobo drivers, chipset etc" phrase actually doesn't mean anything to me. What is a mobo driver - I've never heard the term mobo and what name do I use to search for it. I'm a user rather than a technical type. I am an engineer and can follow instructions but I have no computer speak- so to speak. It needs to be simple for me. Perhaps I should have made that clear - apologies.

After a great dtruggle I have downloaded something - mostly I got various 'too busy' messages.
    I have a folder called 'nf2v116_wxp
Inside the folder I have varoius choices inc Audio and Ethernet
    In Ethernet I have :
    jedh2rx.bin
    jedireg.pat
    nvnet
    NVNET.sys , and
    ramsed.bin

but nothing with G Force or anything like it.
I have put this onto a usb drive bur before I then try to load to the 'old' pc I thought i'd ask if this seems OK
    Cheers

You have downloaded the correct file - once it is unzipped you will see amongst the list of files - Setup.exe. (screenshot)

Double click on this to install the chipset drivers, which include the Ethernet driver.

FYI the nf2 in the file name refers to nForce2.
