Just got a newsletter with a must read section on WGA. This from Brian Livingston of Windows Secrets - definately a must read with some great links and information. Me thinks there are more than a few disgruntled users who feel that MS has crossed the line. Open Mouth - Insert Both Feet.

Thanks for that Rockster, the article describes my situation perfectly. I was refused access to any further updates from the MS Update v6 site unless I caved in and allowed the Validation process offered. Then after I agreed and accepted all their bologna, I was told that no updates were available at that time. Then next time I visited their site (one day later), I was required to go through the Validation process again and this time there were 8 updates available that predated my previous visit.

Whatever money I have paid them, I suggest that they make it last as long as possible.

Thought you all might find This Microsoft WGA Notification Fix to be of interest. Since they have published it and referenced specific files, I guess its OK to talk about other work arounds and specific files on this board now too. I'll await Arie, Pete, Charlesvar or Methusula checking in before I post anything in this regard however.

    Hi Rock,

I think its best not to post any 3rd party fixes on this issue, if only because the WGA issue is complicated by the original version of WGA which requires a download of a validation tool prior to the downloading of any MS software such as Windws Defender and that validation procedure is not at issue and should not be mixed into this. I've seen some 3rd party fixes as well and some do not make a distinction between the two.

Don't know what Arie thinks about this issue, so don't take this as the definitive policy of this board.

    Regards - Charles

I agree with Charles - any third party fix is basically a hack in this case and such topics are verboten on the BBS.

I respect both of those comments and agree that the forum's rules are in place for good reason. I also know its confusing in that WGA involves two different programs if we can call them that, and some have blurred the line of demarcation that exists. Nuff Said ....... no file discussions from these quarters.

    Regards,
    ;)

Thanks Rock for the article, it is powerfull and to the point.

The worst aspect of this is that WGA was installed under the guise of "security" and that is an abuse of trust.

I never fully trust anyone and my defenses are for the so called legitimate software companies and their pratices as much as against malware.

"Contrulations" to MS, they have now joined the ranks of Sony, Real Player et al.

    Regards - Charles
