lj50, as you also say that I have no choice, possibility of having my fingers burnt. Warning, to be even more alert when dealing with retailers. I corresponded several times with Novatech and their response could be said not forth coming, this should have been a warning, their loss in a way as I was very close in buying a new computer from them. Some retailers appear to think, gain some loose some. I will certainly inform you as to what actually was found in the sealed package. Thanks for your interest.

You are correct. Shame on Novatech I guess they just don't care as long they make a sale.

That is why so many Computer companies and retailers finish in liquidation. It would be most helpful if a Web site showed name of firms who acted in this manner to-wards computer hobbyists.

Opened windows 7 package, the disk and wrapper was as shown by you. Most of the install is now completed, however it entirely changed to what I had last time Windows 7 was installed two years back. Printer refuses to be installed as printer disk not recognised. Windows E-mail fails due to my provider not being recognised.

Who manufactured the printer. If you go to their website you should be able to find the latest drivers for it. You have an HP computer just go their website you will find all the drivers there for your machine. Make sure you download and install you chip set drivers first. Then download and install the drivers for your machine.

If the computer is your Compac Presario then you MUST install the drivers for the hardware available at the Compac Website. First, install any chipset drivers, then video, then the rest.

Hi Bobby, To set your mind at rest - I procured 2 XP Home Edition OS's back in 2004. In Hindsight, I would now know that the discs are OEM and should have been installed in a new computer for retail.
Both these discs came complete in a plastic wrap with the COA and bar codes and attached to a 15cm x 21cm Booklet comprising 11 pages of what to do.
Very clearly printed on the end of the booklet are the words: For distribution only with a new PC.
These packs had never been opened and as I now realize, should not have been sold Retail. At the time - you had to request from MS the Security Pack 2 CD's which were supplied free by Post to enable secure ventures into the w.w.w.
I think I mentioned a while back that I had purchased my Windows 7 Pro SP1 64bit DVD from aclassproducts in the UK.
They advertised for sale in Ebay (UK) and it was sent to me by Mail and the DVD was a Dell Reinstallation disc. It had the COA attached to it with instructions to make sure the OS was activated or your Windows will be Non-Genuine.
It installed without problems and has since been Upgraded to W10 Pro, again without problems.
As I understand the scenario - the Reseller is the responsible person in the event of fraudulent sales. The purchaser only ends up out of pocket. Neil.

TonyT: I do not know if it's different in Scotland. I thought his machine was manufactured by HP? Which would make it an HP Compaq computer or am I wrong seeing it was manufactured for the UK? Just for clarification. If so my apologies, I would feel terrible if I was steering any member in the wrong direction. Thanks.

Computer in question was bought in 2009, HP Compac Presario and probably stored prior to sale in their outlet in England, distributed by PCWorld. The Win7installation carried out smoothly and quicker than having to reinstall to previous "factory settings ". However three problems experienced, identical as to the Win 7 install in 2009 as an update from Vista.
    1. Mail to Provider fails. 2. Printer not recognised. 3. my old chestnut - backup again fails. "The last backup did not complete successfully ". Vista that was at present used, slower but was free of the three errors with Windows 7.

Maybe you should try a new hard drive. I have a machine that erases everything on the drive. Drive eRazer Ultra. It works great. I bought it when it first came out paid about $90.00 for it. Now it's about $215.00(US) and up.

Did you try using a different port. Could Virginmedia customer support possibly assist you. They would probably would be best to figure out the problem, being they're your email provider. Unless you do not mind using Outlook. I'll take it that the install of the Windows 7 OS was successful.

I contacted Virginmedia.com user help, the response was very friendly and helpful. Person requested permission to take control of computer, after which error was rectified and back on line. As further protection against error coming back, I copied all entries shown. Regards to the "Backup" scenario, again as previous Windows 7 installations to this current one, it dislikes the WD HD selected. On selecting an alternative HD Toshiba, backup was successful - well for the past twice. Change over from Vista to Windows 7, shows that a large file named Windows.old. Is this file need to be kept? Thanks Bobby.

Did you perform a full install of Windows 7 or an upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7. The reason I ask is that when I performed a full installation of Windows 7 Ultimate from Windows XP Professional on my desktop. I did not have a windows.old folder after the installation completed. I also performed a full installation of Windows 7 Home Premium from Windows Vista on an HP Compaq Presario Desktop and again the end result of the installation was no windows old folder. If everything went well and you're satisfied with the installation. It is safe to delete that folder. If it were me I'd leave it on the machine you have a large enough HDD that it is not going to cause any performance loss. That's you decision whether or not to keep it. If you install Windows 7 by performing a custom installation and don't format the partition during the installation process, files that were used in your previous version of Windows are stored in the Windows.old folder. The type of files in this folder depends on your computer

When I bought the HP Compac Presario (New), Vista was preinstalled (2009), then obtained Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit from HP. The Win 7 update played up considerably and I decided to revert back to Vista. As computer under Vista started to slow considerably, decided to try new Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OEM. The new disk was cleaned installed, presuming that Vista was removed in the process. I notice that one or two of the previous Win 7 (2009) errors are now being experience with new Win 7 disk install.

So is Windows 7 successfully installed on the machine? Did you install the drivers for your motherboard chipset, video, network, and audio devices?

    What errors are you experiencing?

Experience only one, if it can be called an error, mostly annoying. Each time a window is opened as in Libre Office, to clear after closing requires a "Refresh" to be carried out.
I notice that Window update icon is not displayed at bottom right of the screen, honestly this does not bother me as I have no intention of upgrading to Win 10.

I have an icon displayed that can not be deleted.
    Folder Access Denied.
You need permission from Robert/PC to make changes.
    Windows Mail.
    Date created 14/07/2009.
Am I wrong in thinking that after several clean installs since 2009
that this icon should have been deleted.
    Content of icon:
en-US. mscoe.dll. MSOERS.dll. oeimport.dll. wab. wabfind.dll. wabimp.dll. wabmig. Suggestions on removing this icon will be most appreciated.
