broni, thanks for the link to Farbar Service Scanner. Looks like a very useful tool. There are several other tools in that category, including MBAM's Rootkit Scanner (Beta). I run MBAM Pro on all of my Windows installs as a second line of defense.

Those who runs Windows Defender or MSE needs this (or another) layer of protection. Security should be multi layered, in most instances, for premier protection.

howardparsons, I hope that you do get this worked out, if not, that Backup DVD that for most of us (in the US) took 3 to 4 weeks after payment to receive will.

    Best of Luck,
    Cat

    You're welcome :)
Be careful with MBAR. It's still in beta. Always create new restore point before playing with it.

Yea, that area of the registry is protected, you can't write to it. Safety...

FWIW ... Just used it a couple of weeks ago on someone's HP laptop. MSE could detect Alureon (trojan/bootkit) but couldn't do anything about it. MBAR solved the problem. :)

MBAR's scan showed all as being clean on my two main computers, being that I run good security & practice safe computing, I didn't expect for anything to be found.

However, it's still good to have a tool like this on hand, as with your experience, one never knows when it'll be needed. It's still in Beta, so was Windows 8 from 02/29 until 10/26, it was for most intents & purposes, my daily OS.

    Definitely very promising tool.
It already helped me help other people.
All I'm saying since it's still in beta stage be careful while using it.

    Resolving this thread

    Folks,
I'm off for the week-end and will probably nuke my system on Sun. or Mon. PM. I'll let you all know how it goes. In the meantime, I'm going to mark this as "Resolved ".
