    Hi Everyone;
I am in hopes that someone here can help me solve this problem.
I'm really trying to avoid reformatting my hard drive. I am a Diabetic and have
alot of Diabetic, doctor Information on it etc.

    Here's the situation:
I am finding that when I do a restart I find that when I get back to
the Welcome screen and immediately click on my Log-on icon, enter my password,
and click-on the arrow (points to the right) to go to my desktop all that happens
in one of the following 3 things:

If I log-in IMMEDIATELY this happens:
    1. the cursor doughnut spins for approximately 1 minute.
    2. The screen goes Black and the cursor arrow appears dead center of the screen.
    3. I have to do a Ctrl, Alt, Delete .
    4. Ascreen appears with Log Off in a list of several other options.
    5. I click on Log off.
    6. Welcome Screen appears.

If I try to log in after 2-3 minutes this happens:
    1. the cursor doughnut spins for approximately 30 seconds.
    2. My desktop screen appears.
    3. The Internet Accress Icon comes up but with a RED X. (inspite of the fact
that my ethernet cable is plugged in)
    4. I usually have to go to Administrative Tools > the Services Tool
    5. Restart The Diagnostic Policy Service. (Sometimes it starts on it's own before
    I can get it completed).

If I wait the 5 to 6 minutes, this happens:
    1. I restart the computer
    2. When the Welcome screen comes up, I wait for 5 to 6 minutes.
    3. Click on Log in Icon, enter password.
    3. Click on the right arrow on the screen to enter your desktop.
    4. Whalla!... Your in like Flynn and everything is right with the world! No Problems!!

Here is the trouble shooting steps I've taken thus far:

    1. Completed Restart Reair after restarting computer.
    2. Through Anti Virus Scan with avast! free. (current and up to date) No Virus found! Whew!!
    3. Hardware Diagnostics Tools:
Results (I've Only listed the one problem that was found):

Hi Twowheeler, I run XP and if I open Device Manager > expand Disc Drive it shows the model number of the Hard drive. Can you do that in Vista? Neil.

    Yes, you can.

Your best bet is to take a backup & then tinker with the drive as it seems on the verge of total failure. Reinstalling Windows is not going to help. :(
