    I think I finally found the offending add-on.
    Any one knows what this thing is supposed to do?

    JQSIEStartDetectorImpl Class (not verified) Sun Microsystems, Inc Browser Helper Object jps_plugin.dll

    It's a part of Sun Java - screenshots (from IE8).

    Which version of Java do you have installed - latest is Update 12.

    You can check in Add/Remove Programs.

    I have update 11, but why would this stop working after working fine for a long time?
    I guess I try and upgrade to 12 and see if that works.

    It's not necessarily stopped working and although corruption is always a possibility, it's possibly conflicting with another add-on.

    There's no definitive answer to many strange goings on around Windows :)
