Thanks Tony, I think Ive exhausted just about everything. Strangely despite the DDE changes, I'm exactly where I was at the beginning; i.e. I can still create a hyperlink with IE as the default browser, but not with firefox. I guess I'll just have to roll up the white flag once again to the Uber Meister Gates!
Thanks for all your help, at least I've have a good lesson in the workings of Folder options, so all is not lost.

One final throw of the dice, if I uninstall & re-install firefox, is ther any way to keep my data, i.e favourites and favourites toolbar?
    Thanks

If you uninstall then re-install Firefox your bookmarks should remain (you could back them up first though, just to be safe)

    Regarding your issue.
    Please try the following:
    • Start > Run > appwiz.cpl > ok
    • Click on "Set Program Access and Defaults button (located on the left)
    • Click on the word: "Custom "
    • Click on "Mozilla Firefox "
    • Click OK

If that still does not fix the issue download DefaultBrowser from here.
    • Run it
    • Select Firefox
    • Select Apply
    • Close it

    Test again :)

Kimsland, as I have said above there is no problem setting Firefox as my default browser, I have already done it; the problem is that once I have done that, I can't create a hyperlink in Office 2007. If I hadn't properly set Firefox as the default browser, the problem wouldn't arise.

I have the latest Firefox with XP SP3, and I'm running Office 2007

I have checked inserting a link into Excel document and then clicking on it
All was ok, Firefox opened :)

Is it possible you don't have the latest Firefox installed? Here it is: http://getfirefox.com

Also please follow what I have mentioned above, I have previously read the thread in full ;)

Apologies to Kimsland. You have finally solved the problem after 2 days of trying. My last post referred to your first solution which didn't work and your second solution which also didn't work....at first. Your little programme 'defaultbrowser' gives 2 options to set the browser. First your can pick one of the radio buttons and click 'apply';that didnt work. It showed Firefox as my default browser, but my problem remained.
However, underneath that is a section saying " for other browsers use this section ". I initially ignored that as it didn't seem to apply. But then I thought what the heck, and blow me down it worked.
So well done and thanks very much, now what can I complain about?

    Thanks for the update :)

Do note that installing the latest Firefox may have also fixed the issue.

Here is a quick way to force Firefox as default in the future:
    Start > Run > firefox.exe -silent -setDefaultBrowser > ok
(Note: Firefox should be closed first)

Yes, I already tried that, but thanks for the solution. Actually, although I can now create the hyperlink, I have to cut and paste the URL into the bottom of the 'insert hyperlink' box in excel. Whereas in IE it will auto fill if I minimize the web page.
But never mind, thats not a major problem, at least the creation of the hyperlink is now possible.

    Thanks

    That's strange.
I didn't know that. Basically MS have allowed the auto fill only with Internet Explorer, basically creating more work for Users with other browsers
I wonder if Chrome would allow auto fill as well

I thought MS had already been scrutinized about only allowing IE and Windows to be fully compatible together. Obviously there are still some small hidden areas where Users would say, "IE can do that" so therefore playing down other browsers.

    Hmm, nothing has changed.

You're wrong Kimsland somethings do change; after a lifetime as a model citizen, now whenever I see a microsoft product or hear Bill Gates I have an irrational desire to break the law.
    Anyway thanks again

Thanks Tony. I couldnt find anything so I downloaded Office live update 1.4 and it's there in FF under Add ons>plug-ins. Doesnt make any difference though.
Anyway it's simple enough to cut and paste the URL. It makes a 2 seconds task last for 4 seconds and at my age and state of leisure I could give a....!
Incidentally, when I dowloaded that file it said I would get extra options in Microsoft Office 2007 applications such as word and excel... I cant find what, if any there are. So I'm not sure what benefit has accrued from that download, other than more programmes which want to insert themselves into my start menu.

The Office Live Add-in installs new menu options in the 2007 Microsoft Office system and a toolbar in Microsoft Office XP and Microsoft Office 2003. The users can use these menu options and toolbars to open documents located in Office Live Workspace directly from Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Beside that, they also can save files directly from Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to Office Live Workspace.
