I have a laptop running Vista Home Premium, service pak 2 with latest critical upgrades also installed. Also IE 8 installed.

I just tried several times to install IE 9 and each time the upgrade stalls with the message "IE 9 installation has stopped running ". There is a troubleshooting link to Microsoft web site with a list of things to check as being properly installed and upgraded including have Vista at service pak 2 and all latest downloaded upgrades installed, which as I note above I have already done.

    • Added note, my default browser is Firefox which I at first used to download the IE 9 installer link "” NOT the full install binary file.

Then it occurred to me to download through IE 8 which, of course, MS site prefers and which gave me the full binary file not just the small upgrade link through Firefox.

I DID NOT TRY INSTALLING THIS FULL BINARY FILE THROUGH IE 8 FOR THE FOLLOWING REASON:

I.e., I had already tried an IE 8 downloaded full binary file several months ago when IE 9 first became available, (which I assume would have been less upgraded compared to this present version). This earlier try resulted in a locked up or corrupted, unusable IE 9 version which I had to uninstall and which kicked me back to IE 8. So I am leery of presently trying another installation of this present IE 9 binary file.

Anxiety about past experience notwithstanding, I would like to do the right thing and upgrade Vista to IE 9.

Any tips, work-around tricks or advice anyone can offer here would be most appreciated.

Thanks very much for your time and attention,

    Timothy

Hi Timothy. I would first boot up Windows Vista in a clean boot state to make sure that no 3rd party programs are interfering with the installation of IE9. To startup Windows Vista in a clean boot state take a look here, Perform a clean startup to determine whether background programs are interfering with your game or program.

After Windows Vista is running in a clean boot state, download and save the IE9 file to your desktop, Internet Explorer 9. Make sure all background programs are closed and then go ahead and start the installation.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.
