I just returned from being out of the country for 2 weeks. On or about September 8, MS made 20 updates available for me. I'd like to download and install them, but an upgrade to Win 10 has apparently already been downloaded and is waiting to be installed. I don't want to upgrade to Win 10 on this machine, at least not yet. The problem is, every time I click my approval to download those 20 Win 7 updates, the upgrade to Win 10 gets in the way. How do I bypass the Win 10 upgrade process and enable the 20 Win 7 updates to download?

Details of my system are in my signature, below, as well as in the My System profile if you need them.

Evan, I created a Restore Point, then went to Disk Cleanup. The option you recommend, Temporary Windows Installation Files, is not listed there. The closest to it are Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Files, and Temporary Internet Files. When I click on the View Files button, the same 3 files are displayed under all 3 options, and they're old -- from 2006, 2007 and 2011.

    What now?

Download the Extended Disk Cleanup Shortcut from method 1. Then extract the contents of the zipped folder. Right click on the Extended Disk Cleanup shortcut and click on Run as administrator.

When the Disk Cleanup window opens, select all the checkboxes and click on Ok. When the Disk Cleanup program finishes cleaning files from your system, reboot the computer. The $WINDOWS.~BT folder will now be gone from your system.

Got it done! It took a whopping long time, but I followed your steps and was able to get at the new updates and download and install them. One of them was that KB3035583, which I unchecked so it wouldn't download. From what I can tell, everything now works as it should. Thanks once again for the help, Evan.
