Hi rsinfo. I've had this happen where Windows 7 downloads Windows 10 in a folder on your C drive called $WINDOWS.~BT. The way to get rid of it is to run Disk Cleanup and select the option to remove Temporary Windows Installation Files and then reboot the computer. The folder will be removed.

Then you need to uninstall KB3035583 from your system if its present in the installed updates window. Once that is done, copy and paste the following text in red into Notepad:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\GWX]
    "DisableGWX "=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
    "DisableOSUpgrade "=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade]
    "AllowOSUpgrade "=dword:00000000
    "ReservationsAllowed "=dword:00000000

Click File< Save and save the file with the following attributes:

    Filename: Name.reg
    Save as type: All Files
    Encoding: ANSI

When done click on Save. Now close Notepad and navigate to where you saved your registry file. Double click on the registry file to run it. Click on Yes to continue and click on Ok to confirm that the file has been imported into the registry. Then when done, reboot the computer. Windows 10 should not pre-download anymore.

Fortunately, I have the Windows Update on Manual mode so the above update is not installed. I would, however, update the registry to stop Win 8.1 from auto updating.

Create a restore point or back up the registry first.

Good advice. Anyway, I always image my system partition before doing anything.:)
