That didn't work, either. I went to "safe mode" logged in as administrator and got the same results as normal login. I checked the user accounts and I see that both people that this computer is set up for are listed as "administrators. And the lesser account is password protected. Unless you have another plan I will try to get the password for the other account and hope that it works. That will be sometime Sunday afternoon.

    Hi
OK Can you get this far?
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
If system restore window opens what does it say under status?

Although I did what you asked that is not the problem. I could do that without MS's help. I can't do a Restore Point. When I go to system tools and click on system restore nothing happens. I also got the password for the other user and and didn't allow system restore to work either. When I go to user accounts both people are listed as Administrators.

    Hi
OK you can go this far.
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
will it let you check the box "Turn off systen restore on all drives "?

    If so do this.
Check the box to 'Turn off System Restore on all drives' then OK out. Now go back and uncheck the box, then OK out.

    Click Start > Run
Copy and paste the following command on the Run line to see if the System Restore interface opens.

    %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

    Then do this.

Choose Create a restore point and clicked Next, Under "Type a description for your restore point…â€put a name in the box,. Click Create. In the next window click Close

    Let me know

Yes, that worked. So, now that I have a restore point I will run the Kapersky on-line scan and post the results tonite. I have to go to work soon and I know it won't be done by 1:50PM CDT.

Sorry about that. I did try to post Monday nite but windowsbbs was down for maintenance. Anyway I ran Kapersky but their new version 7 wouldn't let me save a log. But, it did report no virus' and no malware.

    Hi Pepse
OK Great, now I have to check their instructions again.
    Thanks for the heads-up.

Since that worked, right click and check the properties of the System Restore shortcut on the Accessories>System Tools link.
It should have the same information as this pic.

Let me know if everythings OK.

    Also please check your PM's.

    Thanks

    Geri,

No, my system restore properties only has "General" and "Shortcut ". And what there is in Shortcut is blank. In fact for "Target Type" is says "This is not a valid shortcut ".

    Click Apply then OK.

    Geri,

I can't do anything with it, except look at it. NO changes are possible. Right clicking does nothing. I can't copy-paste to show you what it looks like, even. The area where the "This is not a valid shortcut" is NOT even in a box to allow me to make a change. The one you show is modifi-able, this one is not.

    Hi Pepsi
    Ok please go here.
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Scroll down to number 278 Restore/Enable System Restore on the left side, Right click on it and Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the prompt.

    Now Reboot the computer.

Check the system restore properties again.

Let me know if it's normal now.

    Thanks
    Geri

Well that doesn't work. When I scrolled down to 278 and right clicked it did not have anything about "Save a reg file ". So, I left clicked and it asked me so save or run the file. I ran it and it asked me if I wanted to add the information to the registry, and I did. I then rebooted the computer and nothing changed.

    Hi Pepse,

Lets see if we can fix that System Restore link.
Highlight and copy the following bolded command, quotes included.

    "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools "

Click Start>Run, paste the command in the Run dialog and hit enter
Delete the current System Restore shortcut found there
Highlight and copy the following command

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Right click a blank space and select New>Shortcut
Paste the command in the Type the location of the item window and click Next
Type System Restore in the Type a name for this shortcut window and click Finish
Highlight and copy the following command.

    %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%

Right click the new shortcut and select Properties
If not selected, select the Shortcut tab
Blank out the Start in line, right click the line and paste the copied command
Verify the following 2 settings then click OK

    Target = %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe
    Start in = %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%

Now navigate to the All Programs>Accessories>System Tools link and verify the System Restore shortcut works.
