My anti-virus provider Avast recently reminded me to do a boot-time scan which I duly did. In actual fact I did two boot- time scans. It did, of course, take a lot of time in doing so. The thing I noticed afterwards was that I now had about 3GB of free space less than I had before the scans. Does anyone know why this might have happened? Thank you.

How did you notice this loss?
Did you go looking for some new files?
Did you reboot incase it was a large temp file?

I regularly check my C: drive, which was what I did the day after two boot-time scans. It was then that I noticed that my free space had dropped from 35 GB to c.30GB. How would I search for a large temp file?

Start > Run > type in %temp% > Enter. This will open the Temp files folder in Windows/File Explorer.

The biggest temporary file on my system is VSU (Revouninstaller) 15mb.

When in the Temp file folder did you Select All - Properties to see the overall size of that folder? Was it several GB? As you know it is safe to delete all those temp files and folders - I suggest you do this and see if your missing GB are restored.

If not look in the Windows temp folder C:\Windows|temp. This is not the same folder that you viewed with the %temp% run command.

Yesterday I had as much as 35GB free space. This morning, after the two preboot scans, it dropped to 23GB. A few minutes ago, after following your cleaning suggestions and running Avast Premium Cleanup, it became 31.6GB. Just now I see that my free space has become 34.6GB. Curiouser and curiouser!

Very strange, but at least you appear to be back to square one with the free space.

I did the %temp% thing and only found around 8mb of TMP files.
