I don't have an external modem and when I search for a modem, it reads there is no modem connected to this computer. I did, however, go the HP website and the "Chameleon" is listed for the 8650c computer not my 8560c. Since the computer seems to go on the first time - I'll just leave it on during the day and close it at night. You've all been great and your time and expertise is appreciated. I'd rather not order a backup 98 cd as I prefer not to use a credit card online.

Thanks again. no doubt I'll be checking in from time to time.

    Maureen :)

OK - Whatever. You could probably call HP (phone) and order the same.
Moving on to a different strategy or actually back to the original, why don't you consider removing the problem devices in device manager as a first step. Don't even worry about opening the case and removing any devices at this point. Then reboot and see what happens - those devices with "yellow marks" aren't working now anyway, so you aren't going to lose anything. We can help you find drivers but if you give up now - well ..........

Side bar comment - without studying further, I think she has one of those machines with PSU laying over the top her PCI slots which requires unfastening her PSU in order to access any cards - a little cramped in there and will frighten most rookies. mattman - can usually replace that HP garbage for a fraction of what they want for replacement parts and get a better end result too - as you found with your sister. Too bad thats not in their advertisements, huh?

    ;)

Yes Rockster, I should not expect someone that may be uncomfortable working inside the case to go moving and removing hardware. If Maureen comes across a friend or relative that has some experience, then maybe the suggestions could guide them.

That would be the day! :) . Once you have taken it out of the showroom, then don't expect any cheap ways out. They have it all tied up, hardware and software...you're stuck...

(Actually I am surprised Maureen has gotten it going without the restore disk, good work!)

    Matt
