Machine is 400Mhz PII w/128MB RAM.

Have only one Optical Drive - subject drive.

Burns and play Audio CDs just fine.
Recognizes commercially created software CDs ok.
    Burns data cds ok

But, from time to time it will not see data cd which I have burned

Example, I have a data cd I burned with the XP Uninstall files on it. I put the cd in the drive and all I get is DVD/CD-RW Drive D: when I go to My Computer. Select the drive and all I get is a blank window. Restart the computer - sees it just fine. Few hours later - same problem.

Uninstalled and reinstalled driver - no help
Downloaded new firmware - no help
Uninstalled and reinstalled device - no help.

    This is annoying.

    Anybody got any ideas?

    Mitch

If the drive is as old as the computer it may be reaching the end of the line. Assume you have checked the cabling to the drive - at both ends?

Commercial CD's are pressed rather than burnt and a known fact that burnt CD's read slower than pressed CD's. I would check the drive by substitution.
