TIF's are dumped each time IE is closed - I'll check on temp files, but think I cleared them out very recently.

That 'Caught Error' is not a microsoft dialog. One of your shell extensions threw it. Usual shellexview or you could hook up adplus -crash and check out the first chance exceptions to see who dunnit.

Well, that one file is definatly looks like windowsupdate goo. Its pretty old though, and ill be you are running WMP10 by now anyways.

Do these files regenerate if you boot into safe mode?
If you disable BITS service, do they regenerate?
Figure out the exact size of the files, and see if you've got a file on this machine with the same size, different name.

As you say, CSC is client side caching, used for offline file syncronization. Dont have a test lab handy, but i think CSC is for file shares, not for internet. Have you done anything with Make Availible Offline on anything in a share, or a share itself? If you mess with the windows\CSC directories directly, this can cause 'undefined' behavior.

    Joe,

Thanks for looking in on this. The problem appears to be solved in that the files have not appeared after several reboots today - yet :) I've no idea which of the various solutions worked, but for the moment they're gone.

Incidentally I tracked those folders to a WU folder in My Documents (on the D: drive) and deleted them, although the phantoms in D:\Recycler had gone from before then. The HD was reformatted in April of this year via the XP install CD, followed by SP1 and SP2 when released. I guess WMP 8 was originally installed and then updated to 9 which I use only occasionally.

Thanks to all for your help and suggestions - I hope this thread can now be put to rest!

    Spoke too soon !

This is getting very silly

Just noticed that the Recycle Bin icon indicated some content - opened it - no files showing - clicked Empty and ..... NO, I don't want to delete Windows ....

Well, (except in theory), Windows is ALREADY in the bin, so you may as well delete it.!!

As well, the Windows folder could be any where. Such as C:\Test\Anotherone\Windows.

But, it would certainly appear that you have gremlins running around.

Would a HiJackThis log be in order?

You're right of course - my brain is getting somewhat befuddled and it's late over here. OK - emptied the Bin and we are still up and running :D

Already done - nothing out of the ordinary in it so no intention to post at present.

And I quote "Computer Experience: Usually not enough "

    lol

    But obviously your call.

You've run more than 1 AV scanner?

Also, take a peek in Services and make sure that all look "normal ".
