Tower mount Coolers destroy the validity of your comments re: my previous example on the side port being over the CPU. And your Antec, CoolerMaster and Thermaltake side ports are considerably lower than the CPU socket on most boards. Similarly, not all tower mount coolers maximize efficiency by exhausting to the rear. My own Zahlmans do better exhausting to the rear but I have a Coolermaster turbine that exhausts straight up into the PSU which has intake fans on both the front and the bottom.

Again, on balence I'm not in disagreement with what you've said but I've seen enough exceptions to continue stating, "It All Depends ".

Actually, tower coolers would also benefit..

ok so it happened again, although i still feel there is progress.

it seems PC runs normally until i do a AV full system scan with AVG, before i started this thread PC use to crash more or less randomly (AVG or online scan plus at other random times).

i chose to keep the case open since i noticed the side fan fan blows in.

I still haven't ruled the PSU failure option, if it is the PSU would it because its not powerful enough to handle my system or would it be because it was damaged?
Although i hope that it is a heat problem im thinking the System Disk, perhaps some one could recommend a Hard disk monitor that should help find the problem.

Download and run SIW and go to Hardware > Sensors

Excellent suggestion - keep us appraised of your temperatures.

I'd also encourage you to spend a little more time cleaning things up with canned air. I use a artist's brush (about ¾-1cm wide) to dislodge dust build-up on CPU heatsinks and fan blades before hitting them with compressed air. You also don't want to let the fans spin freely when hitting them with a blast of air as damage to the bearings can occur if the fan is allowed to spin too fast.

If you have any questionable fans (you previously metioned the noisy one), replace them. One can buy these online for about ¼ of what they'll cost in a store. This is one of the best online suppliers of fans and cooling components.

ty that should help find the problem unfortunately now that i have the data i feel like a total idiot cause i don't know what are the good and what are the bad values:

    Sensor Value Min Max
    ITE IT87
    Voltages
    CPU VCORE 1.15 V 1.15 V 1.18 V
    VIN1 1.54 V 1.54 V 1.54 V
    +3.3V 2.66 V 2.66 V 2.66 V
    +5V 4.81 V 4.81 V 4.84 V
    +12V 11.46 V 6.46 V 12.67 V
    -12V -12.86 V -12.86 V -12.86 V
    -5V -11.46 V -12.22 V -4.93 V
    +5V VCCH 4.68 V 4.68 V 4.73 V
    VBAT 3.22 V 3.22 V 3.22 V
    Temperatures
    TMPIN0 85 °C (184 °F) 81 °C (177 °F) 85 °C (184 °F)
    TMPIN1 36 °C (96 °F) 36 °C (96 °F) 36 °C (96 °F)
    TMPIN2 16 °C (60 °F) 15 °C (58 °F) 43 °C (109 °F)
    Fans
    FANIN0 2556 RPM 2556 RPM 2596 RPM
    HDS722516VLAT20
    Temperatures
    HDD 36 °C (96 °F) 36 °C (96 °F) 36 °C (96 °F)
    WDC WD5000AAKS-22A7B0
    Temperatures
    HDD 41 °C (105 °F) 41 °C (105 °F) 41 °C (105 °F)

here is a screen shot of the report which should be easier to read:

The HDS is the System Disk (Hitachi IDE 160 GB)
THE WDC is the Data Didk (Western Digital Sata 500 GB)
im surprised i figured the WDC would be cooler since it has its own fan.

i have looked for those a few years back they weren't available in my country, but my neighbor has a tool shop and he has some sort or "reverse vacuum" (no idea what they are called ill be borrowing it)

as far as the noise goes its been normal since i opened up the case that was the first reason why i thought we found the problem also as i mentioned already i feel the PC is more stable, so i feel we are on the right track.

I must admit to not knowing what these readings refer to - maybe Rockster can fill us in on that, but the TMPIN0 is mighty high.

Is there no read out for the CPU or the graphics card? (screenshot)

I see the +3.3v is somewhat on the low side, but ....

    isn't the TMPIN0 TMPIN1 TMPIN2 data the CPU temp? (I figure processor 1, 2 and MB)

the data i posted above is all there is as far as sensor or temp goes.

    does that make any sense?

I don't buy that explanation - if you look at CPUID - Hardware Monitor, which appears to be the same applet as is included in SIW they list .....

    CPU =TMPIN0?
    PWM =TMPIN1?
    Chipset =TMPIN3?

If my interpretation is correct your CPU is running at 80 odd deg C and therin lies your problem.

Download and run Hardware Monitor from the URL above and post back with the same screen shot as posted below (from my computer).

I think it is reasonable to conclude that the CPU is overheating - I am aware that Intel's tend to run hotter than AMD's which I have use for years, but that seems far, far too hot to me and I would expect the unscheduled shutdowns you are experiencing at that sort of temperature.

Let's look for confirmation of that temp using another applet - Everest - look under Motherboard > Sensor in the left hand pane (screenshot).

As Rockster suggested you need to clean out the CPU heatsink - without removing it. If the fan is attached with scr_ews into the heatsink it is safe to remove the fan to gain access to the heatsink.

If there is no real evidence of dirt there I think you need to carefully remove the heat sink, clean off the thermal paste and replace with fresh - Artic Silver recommended.

Be aware that removing the heat sink may not be straightforward if the CPU has been getting hot and the existing paste has solidified. It is very easy to rip out the CPU as well and end up with a set of bent pins. Been there - done that :)

Intel runs hotter than AMD? why was i convinced that it was the other way around?

something is hot but doesn't seem like its the CPU

Those SIW Sensor readings don't tell us much without knowing what semi-conductor is being monitored. There was probably a listing above those that identified it, but there also should be a CPU listing below those and SIW will give one a CPU temperature reading. Just to illustrate this and add to the confusion, here is a listing of semi-conductors beginning with the W8 prefix.

It would be helpful to get an accurate read on your CPU temp and I'd also agree with Pete re: concern on your 3.3V reading being 2.66V - that's almost a 20% variance to the spec and that's not good. It also brings us full circle as Pete's initial comments focused on the PSU followed by overheating. While in agreement, I put heat first followed by PSU. I guess its academic at this point but Pete's initial diagnosis appears to be right on the money and both problems need attention.

    ;)

I know I am a bit late here and braindead might of fixed his problem and all but I was looking at that last post by aweston and I would like to recommend some Noctua fans. I've heard very good things about them and I've even bought one of their CPU heatsinks for my PC. They can be found at www.noctua.at. They may not look all that flashy but man do they get the work done.

I just took another look at your posting and I think that is your on die CPU temp. While I was looking I also saw that +12V reading which I had not noticed before - based on these readings, there is a very serious problem with your PSU. Replace it. edit - disregard this - see below

    ;)

edit: Something is haywire with these SIW readings from your attachment. These PSU readings can't be accurate and therefore, it would be logical to also question the accuracy of the temperature readings. What version of SIW are your running?

second edit - get Everest Version 2.20 from http://www.oldversion.com and post temperature and voltage readings

third edit - Pete also linked to Everest from another site - go to either one and post results after downloading and installing.
