I have a HP Touchsmart PC and recently re-formatted the hard drive with the recovert partition provided by HP - now the PC freezes (mouse doesn't work and then generally keyboard stops working. I think I have tracked it down to installling Vista HP SP2 - as doing a system restore to b4 SP2 seems to put it right.

Occasionally (but nort always) I get the blue screen of death with a message BUG_USB_DRIVER and then a memory dump.

I did notice that Windows update was not asking me to install SP2 after SP1 but given that MS are no supporting Vista without SP2 I felt obliged to install it manually.

I have seen a thread here from last year where a number of people with the same PC have the same problem but the conclusion was that it was down to Norton IS - the HP touchsmart comes with it pre-installed - but I have the problem despite never having used the Norton - I removed it as soon as I re-formatted the drive with CCleaner, cleaned up teh registry and deleted Symantec folders left over manually - I am now using MS Essentials havin been convinced that Bit Defender was part of teh problem (but apparently not).

    Any suggestions?? Thanks.

Hi rwm19, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Since you reformatted the computer using the HP recovery partition have you made sure that all of your drivers are up to date including your chipset and graphics drivers?

If not thats the first thing I would do. Since you stated you get a BSOD about your USB driver I would see if you can update those drivers as well. It seems to me that this problem is a driver issue rather than a software compatibility problem.

When you install SP2 make sure that you shut down all background programs that are running in the system tray since one of those programs especially security software could interfere with the installation and cause the PC to freeze up after you reboot it.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

    Thanks

Thanks for the advice - I am now back at work so may take me a few days to try everything you suggest in the evenings at home but I will do that - I did delete my USB ports from Device Manager and let them re-install when I re-booted but that made no difference.

But I DID have MS Security Essentials running when I installed SP2 - will try without.

Not sure how to update my chipset but I think I already updated NVidia drivers.

And I will try to get my system details added in the next few days :0)

    Thanks again
    Bob
