Here's the general gist of what you should say if you contact the supplier of the computer ......

I bought this computer from you in January of this year and initially it ran without any obvious problems.

Since August the cooling fan has started to scream like a dervish when any load has been put on the computer, e.g. running a virus or malware scan. It used not to do this.

Because I was concerned about this I posted a query on WindowsBBS - a Microsoft Comunity Website. One of the suggestions I received was to ensure that the cooling grids at the rear of the computer were free from dust or any blockages. I cleaned out the grids with a paintbrush and sucked up the dust with a vacuum cleaner, but this has made no difference to the fan behaviour.

I was also asked to run a piece of software (Everest) to give a readout of temperatures and voltages. Although the temperatures were apparently within an acceptable range the voltage readings given were way out of spec ....

    CPU Core 1.14 V
    Aux 3.23 V
    +3.3 V 3.30 V
    +5 V 5.54 V
    -5 V -6.96 V
    +12 V 14.04 V
    -12 V -13.68 V

    +5 V Standby 4.99 V
    VBAT Battery 3.28 V

[Get up to date readings before you call]

These readings raised concerns over the performance of the PSU (Power Supply Unit) - I am told that the voltages should be within 0.1 volt or less of the nominal value.

If they respond along the lines that the software may be giving false/unreliable readings grudgingly accept that as a possibility, but emphasise that you are very worried that there may be a problem in that area which is causing excessive the fan activity and possible failure of the computer and you would like to be reassured that the power supply is not failing. Suggest that they physically measure the voltages to be certain that the PSU is supplying the correct voltages.

Ask if they can give any other explanation for the fan behaviour and note down their response - if any.

If they say it's down to the general ambient temperature point out that it was much hotter in April/May than in August and you had no problems then.

I think that's about all you can say at this stage.

    Good morning to you pete.

Firstly may i say THANK YOU for taking time to write out all the instructions.

May i post my latest everest results as i have noticed a change :-

    CPU Core 1.14 V
    Aux 3.23 V
    +3.3 V 3.30 V
    +5 V 5.54 V
    +12 V 14.04 V
    -12 V -13.76 V
    -5 V -7.01 V
    +5 V Standby 5.02 V

Also when i went on to everest web site i noticed a new release (trial) version :- http://www.lavalys.com/ I was thinking if this would be of any use?

Im going to work in a while :( and then to my sons school to sort a problem he has, so please don't think i am being a bit slack in getting on with your great instructions.

    many, many THANKS,
    Sean.

The changes are insignificant - note that I re-ordered the readings to put the + and - voltages together :)

The version of Everest that you have is the last free version - those on the Lavalys website are pay versions - the trial versions are 'crippled' and do not show all the relevant data - including some of the voltage readings that interest us.

Good news indeed - may be the effect of the cooler weather recently too :)

Temps are OK - indicated volts still off target, but, as previously discussed, may be a false reading.

    Hello to you pete.

Well now mate, i have got my daughter to play one of her games/ran numerous spyware scans:- adaware/spybot/avg free antispyware, also anti virus :- avg free antivirus/est nod32 on line scanner/bit defender online scanner and would you believe it, the fan has NOT kicked in once :D

I will keep my grills clear and pay really good attention to where the mains plug in to the tower. IF the fan starts playing up again i have your (what i should say) post number 62 which i have printed out for back up;) .

Pete, i don't know about you mate but i think we could put this one to bed now unless you think different and wow it has gone on for a good while + its good to see all the folk who have viewed it and hopefully got some help as well as me.

All i can say is, i thank you with my heart for your understanding, help and sticking with me on this problem.

And heres an irish blessing for you ( Born in ireland, been over here since i was a child)
May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

    god bless you,
    Sean.

Ps, Thanks also to everyone else who posted in the quest to help ;)

Sorry to jump in, but it would be better if Sean could remove the computer from the kitchen - its not exactly the best of places to keep the computer.

A monthly dust off would be in order too - here in India its so dusty that the fans get chocked within a few months & have to be removed & cleaned thorougly.
