    Hello to you mattman.

    Thanks for that info on Intel Thermal Management and to say it went over my head is a under statement :confused:

    Would it help if i posted a hjt log here to see if i can stop any unnecessary programs thats running? I keep my start ups/auto loading (04 lines) to a minimum -firewall,avg anti virus,spyware guard,site advisor,ctfmon.exe,WMPNSCFG.exe,iTunesHelper.exe?

    I WILL get around to moving/cleaning my pc its like i said trying to get the wife off at the moment id need a crowbar, im getting the evil eye right now.

    Cheers,
    Sean.

    Look in Task Manager as soon as you get to the desktop. Watch Physical Memory -> Available. If that gets low, Page File Usage will rise (and you will see a lot of disk activity because programs are being loaded from the HDD, then, because physical memory is low, excess is being stored as page file back on the HDD).

    You can post a Hijack This log if you would like. I prefer to disable startup items from within their own programs, usually in Tools -> Options, rather than "blocking" them. Is there anything else appearing in the Notification (System) Tray?

    Go through disk cleanup. Delete files and cookies from within the browser Tools menu. Reduce the size of the Temporary Files cache to, say, 50 MB (100MB if you feel generous). This should reduce the amount of checking done by the antivirus. If I find an antivirus seems to be "overly" checking, I uninstall it and if it is a download, download the latest version.

    Do Error Checking (chkdsk) on the drive/s. Uninstall any programs you no longer use and do a defragmentation.

    People have given me their computers because they are getting slower. Even though I cleaned them thoroughly and minimised the number of background programs, I still needed to increase the amount of RAM. As the system gets older, I think you will need to have sufficient RAM available (although the startup loading will still happen), the alternative is to reformat and be selective about what might be loading.
    :) I am keeping a few (original) systems going by increasing the RAM, others I have reformatted and given them a "new lease of life ".
    [Edit: Figures? For Win XP, a system may run happily on 256MB without too many background programs. 512MB as the system gets older. If you run programs that utilise RAM, 1GB]

    Matt

    Do a quick recheck of PeteC's information, it all seemed to be going in the right direction to me.

    I have run chkdsk Auto fix file system errors and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors ( took one and a half hours section four)
    i defraged on wednesday so i left that for now?
    I ran disc clean up.....Not to much to delete as i use Ccleaner and atf ;)
    Her's some readings from task manager:-

    Physical memory
    Total = 1046956
    Available = 566848
    system cache = 631692

    Kernel memory
    Total = 1046956
    paged = 78376
    nonpaged = 18076

    TOO RIGHT, im not in work today and i have told the wife i am going to drag the pc out and have a good old clean up...Petes been great in helping me out here :)

    I don't see any obvious problems in the data you posted - your HJT log looks perfectly clean to me.

    I have at last managed to get the wife off the pc, this new history web site she is working on takes a lot of her time its taken her over.

    I have pulled the pc desk out and gave the grills a good clean at the back of the tower (where the mains plug plugs in) also i have cleaned the grills on the side of the tower, and yes pete/matt it was quite bad! I have now put the tower on the desk so i have easy access to be able to clean it ;)

    The fan at the back still spins when i run a scan using spybot, it was my daughters tenth birthday yesterday so i took her today to spend her birthday money.....a game for the pc and this also starts the fan up straight away.

    I think you ALL have done all you possibly can with this one and its time to put it to bed, IF it gets any worse before christmas i will take it back to the shop.

    PLEASE petec would you kindly write that script we talked about in that other post, like i said so i dont look a fool and you know what they are like trying to give you the knock back......(ONLY if you have the time).

    MANY THANKS to everyone (especially Petec) who gave me all the brilliant help/guidence/and the new things that i have learnt in a way a numpty like me could follow :D

    Cheers and good luck to ALL,
    Sean.

    A job well done by the sound of it :)

    If there is only one fan at the back by the grill where the power plug is situated that is the PSU (Power Supply Unit) cooling fan which will run all the time - may or may not fluctuate in speed depending on the sophistication of the PSU, but will run all the time.

    If there is a second fan that is a case fan to provide cooling to the internals - that will also run all the time and likewise may or may not fluctuate in speed depending on it's sophistication.

    The fan you will not see without opening the case is the CPU fan which is generally controlled by CPU temperature - your's is according to the Everest readings you posted.

    It is possible that the Northbridge chip on the motherboard also has a fan although many are passively cooled with a simple heat sink or a heat pipe.

    Likewise the graphics card may have a fan if it is high end - unlikely in your case I think, unless the graphics are on an onboard chip - probable in your case.

    If the dust on the back grill was bad there is every likelyhood that the cooling fins on the CPU are chocker with dust too which would explain the fan ramping up more than usual under high CPU usage. Cleaning that is not a job for you I feel :)

    Yes, I will write you a script, but it will be in a few days time as I am off for a few days with my sister tomorrow (Sat).

    Glad we were able to help and hopefully your confidence in dealing with the computer has increased :D

    I just spotted this latest release and thought it might give you another reference point re: your voltages. It also does fan speeds and a few other things that may be of interest. You can find this little goodie here.

    Good morning to you Rockster2U.

    when i try to open it i get a message that says:speedfan has encountered a problem and needs to close. Its a shame because after reading what it does i think it would have helped me find out whats happening regarding the voltages.

    CHEERS,
    Sean.

    Hi all.

    I really dont know if this has anything to do with the fan always kicking in, just thought id run it past you good folk ( i installed this update at the time of it coming out).

    Could i uninstall it safely and see if my fan stops kicking when i run certain scans / playing games or should i leave it alone

    THANKS to everyone,
    Sean.

    It seems like it is supposed to be a "processor reliability update "
    thing, as Intel never has any bugs or anything in their chips.

    I would uninstall it - I have read elsewhere of problems with this update and the fact it is offered to PC's which do not have the processors mentioned. I have 2 Intel based PC's and one AMD (my main desktop) and uninstalled the patch from both the Intel based 'puters (XP Pro & Vista Business) and then hid it in Windows Update. Noted no changes with or without the patch - best off without it I would say.

    Guess you have Automatic Updates set to Automatic - everything MS offers that you do not have installed is installed.

    I have Automatic Updates configured to 'Notify, but don't automatically download or install'. When updates are available I see a yellow shield with a ! in the notification area - clicking on that shows a list of updates available with a check mark against each by default. I uncheck those I do not want and seem to recall another check box saying 'Do not show this update again'.

    Control Panel > Security Centre > Manage Security Settings for - Automatic Updates.

    Alternative route is Start > Microsoft Update and follow the instructions to hide an update once the scan has been made and a list of updates presented.

    I already have windows updates set to:Notify, but don't automatically download or install, its just that i am one of those people who trusts microsoft to be safe and download all the latests updates :eek:

    Pete when i go to uninstall the update i get a warning about a load of updates and installed progams might not work, i will type you all the things that might not work (i can't copy/paste them and there's quite a few) but its friday night and im going for a few sherberts with my mates, would it be ok to show you tommorow?

    Cheers pete,
    Sean.
