Try tapping the F1, F2 and Delete keys rapidly as soon as the first screen appears. Alternative...tap the Pause key. You can go one screen at a time by tapping the Pause and Enter keys alternately.

They should have supplied a motherboard manual with the system, it will tell you how at the start of the BIOS Settings section.

    Been there, done that :D

If all else fails when trying to get into the BIOS, replace your USB keyboard with a PS/2 keyboard. Assuming you find the right key, you should definitely be able to get into the bios.

You are right to be cautious when venturing into unknown territory and are to be commended for that :)

It looks like we have the same BIOS, so what I see you should see also.

As soon as the computer boots press the Del key to enter setup.

You should see a screen similar to Screenshot 1 with Main highlighted in the blue menu bar at the top.

Use the right arrow key to move the highlight across to Power and then the down arrow key to move down the menu to highlight Hardware Monitor - Screenshot 2.

With that highlighted press Enter to see the voltages - Screenshot 3

Note them down - then press F10 - a message box should appear in the centre of the screen 'Save configuration changes and Exit'. By default Yes is highlighted - if by chance it is not use the left arrow key to move the highlight to Yes and press Enter. (The dialogue will appear whether or not you have made any changes) The computer will reboot to Windows.

The changes - none in this case, are saved to the CMOS chip.

    Good morning to you.
Got a good headache this morning and feel like death chaps

Right here we go, i went in to bios following your fine instructions (saved them to my sons laptop) but at the top of the screen there was no power or anything else to highlight only this:- Phoenix - award bios cmos set up utilility.further down i get these options:-

    standard cmos features
    advanced bios features
    advanced chipset features
    integrated peripherals
power management set up (when entered just these options- Ac loss auto restart= OFF, +Wake up event detect (press enter)

i entered all of them and still couldent see anything to do with hardware monitor?

so i thought id better get in touch with you for your good advice.

I need some paracetamol and fruit juice!!!
    Cheers chaps,
    Sean.

    And you expect sympathy? :D

    Sean

Glad to see you bit the bullet even in your clearly delicate state :)

If you are not seeing a BIOS screen as shown in my screenshot we have to assume that your BIOS is not the same as mine despite having the same number. I did note, however that our DMI BIOS versions are completely different ....

Yours - DMI BIOS Version 6.00 PG

Mine - DMI BIOS Version ASUS A8N-SLI Premium ACPI BIOS Revision 1009

Therein probably lies the difference, so, after all the heartache, it would appear that the voltage information is not available in your BIOS :(

I'll be back later - searching for other voltage monitors.

I am using Phoenix award BIOS v6.00PG. I am guessing that your setup, main menu, looks more like mine. My main menu is split into a left panel and a right panel.

    The left panel has;
    standard cmos features
    advanced bios features
    advanced chipset features
    integrated peripherals
    power management setup
    PnP/PCI configuration

    The right panel has;
    H/W monitor
    Cell menu
    Load optimized defaults
    BIOS setting password
    Save and exit setup
    Exit without saving

If yours is like mine, then use the cursor movement keys to get over to 'H/W monitor' on the right panel. Highlight it, then hit the enter key. On the next screen, select Pchealth status to see your voltages.

I've drawn a blank in trying to locate a voltage monitor which is compatible with your sensor and your BIOS does not appear to give the information either.

This leaves just two options ....

Physically measure the voltages as posted by Chiles4 earlier, or ....

Assume that the voltages shown by Everest are false - which is quite possible as no other monitor appears to be compatible with the sensor. Bear in mind that Everest predates your BIOS by some years and has itself been discontinued (not updated) as first posted by Rockster.

I doubt you will follow the first option :) so the best thing is - let sleeping dogs lie :) If there is a problem the computer is still under warranty I guess.

    Spot on mate:eek:

    , yes untill christmas

All in all this has been an interesting/worthwhile leanring experience (BIOS)

Cheers and good luck to all,

You're welcome - it has been a learning curve for you and you have excelled and are the wiser for it :)

Before we let this go - and before I script what you should say to the shop let's do just one more thing ....

When you have two windows open and the fan is thrashing merrily open up Everest and post this detail (updated) please....

    Motherboard 45 °C (113 °F)
    CPU 54 °C (129 °F)
    Aux 47 °C (117 °F)
    Seagate ST3320820AS 44 °C (111 °F)

    Cooling Fans:
    CPU 2192 RPM

And one final question which was not asked before - is there a case fan on the computer? On the rear of the computer where the mains lead plugs in there should be a grill, behind which you may see a fan spinning - that is the PSU fan. Is there any other grill on the rear of the case through which you can see a fan? Use a torch for a good look into the grill(s). If there is no other fan obviously visible can you identify if it is the PSU fan which steps up a notch?

    Good morning Pete.

My daughter was on the pc last night when she had two windows open youtube/???? when the fan kicked in, she is still asleep and ill be gone to work when she gets up so ill get her to go on whatever she was looking at and post the everest sensor readings tonight if thats ok.

This morning i have run spybot s&d (Nothing found) as i know this always sets the fan off and these are the readings from everest sensor:-

    Sensor Properties:
Sensor Type Winbond W83647HF (ISA 290h)

    Temperatures:
    Motherboard 40 °C (104 °F)
    CPU 57 °C (135 °F)
    Aux 48 °C (118 °F)
    Seagate ST3320820AS 39 °C (102 °F)

    Cooling Fans:
    CPU 3516 RPM

Also i had task manager open and watched the memory usage slowly creep up to 29'688 kb when the fan kicked in at that point.

Dont know if this helps mate?

As for the fan/fans at the back of my pc if its ok ill have a good look later because like i said................work :( and i have to pull out the desk and mess about i really dont want to rush it.

    MANY THANKS,
    Sean.

    Yep - that helps a lot :)

I think the situation is clearer now .....

    Computer idling ....

    CPU 32 °C (90 °F)
    Cooling Fans:
    CPU 2192 RPM

    Computer 'working' ....

    CPU 57 °C (135 °F)
    Cooling Fans:
    CPU 3516 RPM

I think your computer is set up for variable fan speed control (it's the fan on the CPU which is monitored). As the computer works harder the CPU temperature rises (normal) and the fan speed increases to provide more cooling. So everything is working/responding as it should.

As this phenomenon is a recent occurrence my first bet would be that there is a dust buildup in the case, particularly in the CPU cooler. If the computer is sitting on the floor/carpet this would not be surprising. OTH the niose you hear of the fan thrashing may be indicative of noisy/dry/failing fan bearings. Difficult to be precise without actually hearing it :)

    Good Morning Petec.

I was banned from using the pc last night as my wife is researching her family history and helping to build a new web site all about the local history around hear where we live, so sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

The tower is inside a computer desk which is open at the back more or less on the floor in the kitchen. we are going to move it onto the desk top so i can clean the dust and produce a better air flow around the tower to see if this helps, as it is now its a real pain to get to clean the grills

Please stick with me as the pc is always booked up hear at our house, ill let you know how i get on as soon as ive done the above.

    THANKS,
    Sean

I am not sure this is an Intel based motherboard. I typed "Intel fan speed" into a websearch and first three hits were these:
    http://au.wrs.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGk5...el/reseller/emea/spa/tech_reference/99346.htm
    http://au.wrs.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGk5.../support/processors/pentium4/sb/cs-007999.htm
    http://au.wrs.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGk5...om/cd/channel/reseller/asmo-na/eng/216412.htm
I know Intel Thermal Management causes the fan to "kick in" (and maybe when unexpected).

Located in the kitchen, there will be airborne oil molecules, these will coat cooling equipment like heatsinks and could cause fan bearings to "gum up ".

You should be able to find a "quiet" or "silent" fan for the CPU.

I could not really understand "Thermal Management" when it scares the heck out of the user.

From 32*C to 57*C, your CPU is starting to do a lot of work, maybe background programs are causing a lot of CPU usage (background programs seem to grow without our knowledge  )

    Matt
