    Pete, For some reason this is not working;
When I right click My Computer icon > Properties >
I'm on My Computer Properties w/ General & Shortcut tabs. When I last tried this I was somewhere else. What am I doing wrong?

Cansola that. I just realised it's not the icon on my desktop, for some reason I have to right click My Computer on the Start Menu. This doesn't seem to be what you described.
Should I have to go through the Start Menu?

Just called around for a look in the thread.

It sounds like the My Computer icon on the desktop is only a shortcut. You can right-click on it and delete it. Go to the Start menu, right-click on My Computer and select "Show on Desktop ". The desktop icon will then have the correct Properties (System Properties).

    Thx Matt that worked.

How do I change the default settings for Windows Explorer?
The view in Pete's attachment (earlier in this thread) is what I'm after.
To temporarily achieve that view: I click the Folders button.
Also I want the default in the address bar to be My Computer not My Docs.
Prior to XP this was the default.

I want to transfer data from my other computer to this new HD. What's the easiest way to do this? I'd rather not pull the drive to attach it to the other computer.

Chas, I suggest you start doing websearches for your queries. Putting the necessary query terms into a search can be the key, but it will also help with improving your experience level. You will learn as you go. I know that Win Explorer default folder can be changed, it only took me a few minutes of websearching to find it

Thx Matt. I took a minute to figure out what to do, but it worked.
I just did a search and it looks like there is lots of info.
Sometimes I search and find no answers. Not sure why.
I've never been the best searcher, but this will help me learn.
    Thx!

I am so dense at times!
After reading several pages about copying, it occured to me that I could just use the portable external drive I'm using. It has some of my backups. HELLO!!!
I can't believe I didn't think of this days ago!

What was the exact search term you used?
I'm hoping this will help me.

:) The "term" is often the key. Use websearching as much as you can and you will start to get the hang of it. Look at the Help section of the search engine.

At first I was going to look for...windows explorer setting. I thought/recalled that it is probably a default setting. The search ...windows explorer setting...will bring up hits for all those terms, arghh. For my search engine if you put terms in quotation marks, it will keep those terms together, that is, "Windows Explorer ", then it won't search for Internet Explorer. If I put a + in front of a term, it will search for pages with the "+" term included.

    I searched for
    "Windows Explorer" default
that link I posted was the third in the list of hits.

Get to know your search engine :)

    Matt

Pete attached a picture, or image, of his hard drive structure on this thread. I just tried various searches to find out how this was done, but nothing.
Can someone tell me how to post an image like this?

Pete, I'm ready to find out find out how to move the Favourites (and other files) to the Docs partition. (My Word docs are already there.)

    Chas

I would make 2 folders on your Data partition, one My Documents and another with sub folders .....

    Outlook Express
    Favourites
    Address Book

Download and install Tweak UI and go to My Computer > Special folders in the LH pane - select from the dropdown list and hit the Change Location button & Browse for folder. Use this to locate My Documents and Favourites on the D:\ drive in the folders you created above.

For OE go to Tools > Options > Maintenance tab - click on Store folder and then on Change and enter the new location on D:\

For the Address Book read and follow ......

Inside Outlook Express - Tips and Ideas - Move the Windows Address Book

Pete, I just read a review of Tweak UI at C/Net and they warn about inexperienced (non power uses) messing w/ it.
I expect this is much simpler than tweaking the registry, which I've in the past, though that was following info from a Windows Secrets book.
If you say I should proceed, I will.

I really do not know what CNet are on about - Tweak UI is a Graphical User Interface for certain registry edits and is much safer than fiddling in the Registry directly. Any changes are reversible by unchecking the check box and so on.

    Proceed :)
