I take you mean copying of files during the setup, it says some file is corrupt. A good sign in all.
You can clean the CD, check for scatches. Get a CD drive cleaner, the laser lense may be dusty, this may be the problem.
To check if all files are copied, do "dir c:\win98 ", you will get a listing of all files. The last thing that will appear on the screen is the amount of files, there should be 98.
You can keep this thread going, it is a continuation of the original problem.

Use this command to delete all of them, and try recopying them.
    del c:\win98\*.*
You say this is a new drive?

I believe this working computer is doing some faulty copying, and you are copying too much stuff. I have seen some systems have problems copying from the CD to a hard drive, especially when sub folders are involved, and there are quite a few subfolders attached to Win98, especially the TOUR folder. I believe this is the problem.
You only need the contents of the Win98 folder from the Windows CD. You do not need anything of the OLS and TOUR folders or any folders connected to them. These two subfolders would be wasting space.
You'll need to select the files in the Win98 folder and make sure those two folders are not selected.

That was the trick! I have win98 working!.....now I have other problems. Want to keep going? I think I have motherboard issues, I have a cd drive that is not recognized as being there. When connected to the machine off, then boot...it more or less disconnects the hard drive...so it asks for a system disk to boot from. With the cd drive out it boots fine.
No problem if you have better things to do. I'm really just bringing a freebie back to life. You have helped quite a lot as it is working. I have several questions about video drivers etc. ;those are the least of my problems.
One other question, if windows will setup with only the WIN98 folder, am I missing some functions because I don't have the other folders on the disk? I see I still got the AOL,MSN ****. I wonder beacause with no CD Drive I may not have much use for this computer.
    Thanks again for helping!!!

Good to hear 98 is up and running. You are not missing out on anything.
This CD may be not be connected properly, this isn't the parallel port one, right? Look on the back of it, there is a jumper there, and a diagram should be on top of it, showing what position the jumper configures the drive to be. Master Slave or CS (Cable Select).
On the connecting ribbon, the end position is the Slave, the middle is the Master. If the jumper is set to CS, the place you put it on the ribbon determines Master or Slave. Most plain CD roms work better on the Slave and jumpered as the Slave, and not connected to the same ribbon as the hard drive.
When the CD is working, you'll need to install the motherboard drivers first.
Aida32 is a good program for identifying hardware.

No its an internal CD drive...no jumpers...I went to the website (Mitsumi) and got some info....I believe its hooked up right.
I've gone through the trouble of networking to the other computer which was easy for a change. So I can access that cd drive.
My hope is to get the cd working and better video...I think the card is not so good. I finally got 800x600 but the color won't go beyond 16 so the web looks quite funny. There is no manufacturers name on the card. I got where I am by trial and error with that. Monitor is a CTX freebie. I'll go on a driver search I think.

It is CRMC-FX001D I have the manual for it and have been through it many times. Maybe a bios setting needs to be changed?

That is a SCSI drive, and only rated from 2x to 10x speed. I am not that familiar installing this type of drive. You can find a driver here, but your motherboard may not support it. You already had some problems, you may also need a SCSI adaptor, as it will not work hooked up to an IDE cable.
    http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=11135
    user : drivers
    password : all

Your motherboard may have support for SCSI, get Aida32 if you can get online with it. Or install Aida32 on the working computer, and use floppies to transfer all the files into a folder, as it does not really need an install to work I have found. This program can tell you all kinds of things about the computer.

I think it would be easier to get a IDE CD Rom, Frye's has them for less than $20, and windows already has it's own driver for them.

BIOS says it will boot from a scsi but the drive needs an adapter so thats out. I see I must need a video card update as this one is very basic. I'll try to get a freebie from someone upgrading.
I might be as far as I can go for now?

That is an entirely different matter, your BIOS means it will boot from a SCSI hard drive, not from a CD.
This is not to mean the CD will not work, just not bootable.
    Images of SCSI connectors
This is a good learning experience, though.

That link is interesting but my cd drive has a regular IDE type connector. Its the same model as whats in my working computer that I referred to earlier. The manual I have says it should have an adapter card (thats where the jumpers are). My working computer is Gateway with win98. I guess I should read more thoroughly. There is no adapter in the Gateway. Maybe I will swap them and see what happens.
