    Hi all

You guys have too much time on your hands. Lol!

Now you got me doing it!

In reading thru this Academic thread for that is what it is "Academic ". Since anytime now M$ is going to put out a fix for this. Then we can tackle what that fix breaks.

Since I use Email Profiles I have noticed the symptoms that Lonnie speaks of. And Lonnie I have also noticed that some programs when installed will assume you may need a shared address book and do this on install. I think it is Office or Works probably when Outlook (not OE) is installed.

TekGod’s fix is good because it gets it off the desktop but does not correct the name. M$ made two boo boos here. Not only is it not created in the correct location but it is now incorrectly named since the naming routine is looking for the name of the original WAB to use as the name, this name is not found and hence the ~. The proof the routine that does this is really broke is the fact that even when using the Start In fix by Tek that it still cannot find the original WAB in order to rename the backup properly.

BTW Lonnie the way you would use profiles is if, say you had a personal and a business email account and wanted them both on the same computer but completely separate. One or both of these accounts could then have a password just to access OE. Once setup there is a function to switch to the other account. This often used also to allow other family members to have their own email and not intermingled. Some set up a profile if they are changing ISP’s. So they can start and have a new email address while phasing out the old one.

Jim’s description and summation is the accurate status quo on this condition.

    Mike

    aint that the truth

Thank you I now now a little about profiles to much to sink in all at one time :) , I notice you didnt mention IEs profiles as being any differant,I thought there were ,they are, having to do with what we decide to let a web site see if we use profile assistant
ie options advanced, whole nuther subject ..

any way, once I had removed it, and got rid of any ~~~ of those, critters, it atleast was never created on the desktop again for me [eleswhere yes]

Lets close this subject for good until another fix fix's something else to fix again

PS trekgod " icon I double clicked to edit my Address Book.... save the Start Menu and Quick Launch which puts it in the c: root. "

Maybe dont use any user created shortcut's for any addrs book and oe especialy in the qlaunck just import export to keep current
If done that way once you get rid or those things it shouldnt show up ) [[[[at least on the desktop]]]]
    Regards
    Lonny
