I have Windows XP Pro and just installed Office 2003. For some reason my outlook 2003 is not working properly. I can send e-mails but cannot receive any. I get an error message that my user name and password is not accepted by the server but I have checked with my internet provider and they are both correct.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas as to how to correct it?

Everything was working fine with Office 2000 and it's just with the installation of Office 2003.

    Thank you

Outlook has an option to use Secure Password Authentication (SPA), which sounds like a good thing, but in my experience it's rarely used, you may need it or you may not.
Try disabling/enabling it under the Tools -> E-mail accounts -> View or change existing e-mail accounts.

BTW, I think this post may be in the wrong forum.

Can't say I have any more bright ideas right off the bat.

What may help a bit more would be if you could copy out the entire error message you get when trying to receive your mail.

If you only see the error message on the status bar of Outlook you may need to double click the status bar in order to see the Send/Receive dialog box, there should be a couple of tabs there, I believe one is called Errors or some such.

Copy the entire error message and paste it here, that may give us some more clues as to what the problem is.

I'm guessing you're using POP to receive and SMTP to send - or are you connecting to an Exchange server?

Arie - thank you. I always have a hard time thinking of a title. Sorry will try to be more on the ball.

Steve - I had Outlook 2000 before so when I installed Office 2003 should everything not just automatically work??? I have printed the articles you suggested and will try them tonight when I go home.

Is this something that always happens when you install Office 2003???

    Thanks.

I upgraded from ver 2002 and didn't have to do anything else.

Is this a home pc that's not part of an exchange server enviroment?

The error message I get is as follows:-

Task 'pop.videotron.ca(1) - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC92): 'Your e-mail server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password in your account properties. Under Tools, click E-Mail accounts. The server responded: -ERR Missing argument.

It seems that I can send out e-mails - no problem but can't receive. I have checked with my IP provider and both my user name and password are correct and that tech support could not figure out why this is happening.

So now I've turned to the experts - this site!!!

    Thanks. :)

If you're comfortable using the command line you can try to Telnet into the mail server using the instructions on this site .
Basically what you want to do is to go via Start -> Run -> CMD
and in the prompt you write:

    Code:
    telnet <your server name> 110 [ENTER]
    user <your username>[ENTER]
    pass <your password>[ENTER]

If you get an error message during this phase it would point to the problem being with the mail server. if not we'll need to dig further into Outlook.

To end your session with the mail server, you just enter:
    Code:
    quit[ENTER]

BTW, your port number for POP is set to 110 (the default port for POP), correct?

Apparently a friend of mine that had the same problem told me I need to uninstall my TCP/IP and then re-install it. Problem is that my computer will not allow me to uninstall this. The uninstall is greyed out and I can't uninstall it.

    Any suggestions concerning this??

P.S.: I do have administrator rights and have verified it also.

    Thanks for all your help.

I'm really stumped by this - nothing I do seems to help. I still cannot receive my e-mails and I keep getting the box poping up for my password.

I know my username and password is correct because I've set up Outlook Express with no problems so it's somehting blocking Outlook 2003 from working.

All the other Office 2003 programs work with absolutely no problem.

    Any other ideas??

Anne - it can be a little hard to help without feedback from you.

Did you do the things Laage and Arie suggested? If so, what results?

A friend of mine that is an IT professional looked at it and was not able to figure out why am having this problem. He tried everything he could think of.

I didn't try the Arie's and Laage suggestions as I am not comfortable enough to mess around to much with my computer in case I really mess it up. I figured if my friend can't figure it out I certainly couldn't.

I have however installed this Office 2003 on my laptop with absolutely no problem so I tried to uninstall from my desktop so I can re-install fresh but unfortunately it seems that the computer remembers all my e-mail addresses so I end up with the same problem.

Is there a way I can completely clear Office (or Outlook 2003) from my computer including whatever it has kept in it's memory so I can try a fresh install?? Please let me know if this is possible.

Sorry for not getting back to you and thanks.

first, use "Scanost" or "Scanpst" which located on "C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033" to reply your data file. if it is still not working, second, delete the profile for the email account, rebulit it, then have a try!
at last suggest u re-install system and office. good luck!

    Hi,

Sorry to bring this thread back to life.

But i thought i should seeing as i managed to solve this problem :)
(well it worked for me anyway)

    1. Open My Computer
    2. Double click on C Drive
    3. Right Click on the Windows folder and choose Properties
    4. Make sure that Read Only is Unticked!! (must be unticked)
    5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 on the following folders Documents and Settings & Program Files

Now you should be able to go back into Outlook and receive your email as normal. You will however need to enter your password again, but only once cause it should actually remember it this time.

Good Luck and I hope it solves the problem for you.
p.s. If it does please let me know somehow

Thank you. One question though - when I untick the Read only I get a message if this is for this file only or for the subfiles. I picked this file only and when I went back into it the tick mark was back on. The same happened to the Documents & Settings and Program Files.

What do I do about that? Why does it not change?

    Thank You.

You need to make sure you tick "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files "

    Otherwise it wont work
