This problem is just an annoyance, but I'd like to get it solved, if possible. In 4.7x, when I opened messenger, I could set it to go to my inbox and get new messages on startup. This does not seem to be possible in 6.2.1. I have searched in preferences many times, but cannot find this option.

    Hi shawbob,

When I open Messenger in Netscape 6 it automatically opens with Inbox, and retrieves the Mail. Same for 4.79, with no settings in Preferences.

Do you mean that you want the Browser to open in Messenger, and not your Home Page?

If so, there is a setting in Preferences|Appearance

    Insert a tick here:
    When Netscape starts up open
     Netscape Mail

    If this doesn't work, then:

Right click your Netscape 6 Desktop Icon
    Select Properties
    Click on the Shortcut Tab
to the Target line, after .exe "
Add one space after .exe "
    Type -mail

The line will look like so:
    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape 6\netscp6.exe" -mail

Let us know if this works for you.

I still want my home page to open when I open Netscape, but when I go to messenger, it opens to a local folders view, then I have to choose inbox, then click on get messages. Sorry that wasn't clear before. You say yours opens the way 4.7x used to for me. Did you set it this way, or was it already like that?

Do you have your Local Mail expanded? If so, Messenger should automatically open in Inbox.

    Check these settings in Preferences:

    Mail & Newsgroups
    Mail Server
    Edit
Do you have a tick beside:
    Remember Password
Check for Mail every 10 minutes
    Automatically download any new messages

Are you set up this way?

The path is a little different. in local folders, which is what opens first, view settings for this account, server settings, there is a check box for check for new mail at startup. when this is checked, it gets new mail when i select the inbox, but messenger still opens to local folders.

Do you have the "Local Mail" expanded, and do you have Inbox highlighted?

I have tried to recreate what you say is happening, and I can't. Not in 6.2.1 or 4.79. No matter what I do, Messenger always opens with Inbox, and immediately checks for Mail. Maybe I'm missing something obvious?

I have Local Mail expanded, i.e., I have clicked on the + next to the Local Mail folder, and Inbox is highlighted.

whenever i open messenger, local folders is always highlighted. i tried to remove local folders, since it looks like an account unto itself, but it is not an option. this is getting very strange!

    You're talking about 6.2, and I was describing 4.79.

Don't delete Local Folders in 6.2!

At the very top of the left pane in 6.2 Messenger, your User name should be expanded. Then Inbox highlighted.

At the top of the left pane in 4.79 Messenger, Local Mail should be expanded with Inbox highlight.

No, it should automatically open with Inbox highlighted under your User name. With the User name folder expanded.

Great! I seem to have had you chasing your tail.

Just be sure to keep 4.7x around, as the mail feature in 6.2 is still pretty rough!

Interesting that you had to set 6.2 as your default Mail. I don't use the Mail & NG at all, and have 4.79 set as the default?

I set my mailbox within 6.2.1 to default, rather than the local folder. thanks for your help. sometimes having a sounding board gets you to see the answer!
