    Hi

I have got two hard disk on my desktop one of them is called C for OS XP SP3 and other is called D for program files and Data

Recently whenever I restarted my PC I would have been experiencing the message below

Checking file system on D :
    Type : NTFS

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue.

Windows will now check the disk.

CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)
    File verification completed

CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3 )
    File verification for completed

CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 3 )
    Security descriptors completed

After that I could not write the whole message

What could be causing this problem ?

    Thanks

    Hi,

I only rewcommend this because it is immediate and yields an impressive, detailed amount of data.

    Speedfan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Use the SMART tab in the interface; in the drop down field menu, choose the drive in question and then let their software analyze that drive. It will present an immediate report with a surprising number of details from which you might learn important things.

Free, fast and why not, it's a good beginning.

Right? If only everything on the planet were that fast and rich with data. Forget, free.

But bottom line, what did it report re that drive??????

Not just the percentages at the bottom, but in each element??

If Speed Fan reported indications the drive is coming to the end of its journey, I would think next step is to go to the WD site and download their diagnostics and run them.

One more....what temp is that drive running at? Speed fan also gives the parameters of OK temps for the individual drives. Each is slightly different.

Ok, after thought: if you do see iffy elements via
Speedfan and go to WD, you will need the model# of the drive. I can't tell if there is still a free version like the one ihave had forever, but see if you can download a free version of Astra32:

    http://www.astra32.com/download.htm

I think there are more sophisticated apps of this sort, but I still like Astra and use it.

If you run it, it will tell you lots about yr system including the model numbers of yr drives.

I posted a link to Astra32 above anticipating this issue. Agia, not sure if you can get free one, but I think you can at least get a trial.

I thought the drive said "WD" Including in the SpeedFan diagnostics no? If so, it is made by Western Digital.

And the numbers following the WD should be the model number.

Still am uberly curious re if the SpeedFan online instant diagnostics came up with serious warnings. They assess those differentially as you now know.

Thanks for finding a way to post the results and doing that!

Yr drive is made by Seagate, not Western Digital. It is ST340810A.

Read the early part of the report. "Very unusual," Speed Fan says.

Problem seems to have reversed, but this is an old drive that does, from this report appear on the edge.

It is also running hot and beyond the parameters acceptable for ths drive. By the way, when was the last time you cleaned out the dust, etc. from inside yr puter with compressed air?

As speedFan suggests, I would back up your files.

Then, I would go to Seagate and download their diagnostics for yr IDE drive and run them.

I think its fabulous you noticed things before the puppy failed.'

Good Plan. But my take is this may be more serious than bad sectors.

Again, I urge you to back up all your files before running anything further at this juncture.

These tests stress the drive. I do not want you to loose yr files!!!

Given this is an old and small drive, can you burn yr critical files to a DVD???
