Well, I just got fed up with the whole situation and decided to buy a new scanner. I did have to install a USB port on my computer, but it installed easily, and Plug'n'Pray just blinked once and accepted the new port. (I removed the second parallel port, since I didn't need it any more.) The printer I got is an Epson Perfection 1260, which was on sale at CompUSA for $49.99 (regularly $79.99). They sold me the USB port as well - don't you just love one-stop shopping? So all is well, and I'm going to see if anyone I know can use the old HP. Thanks to everyone here for the usual fine job of providing information!
