MalwareBytes does not remove a virus. Virus and Malware/Spyware are 2 different things. My suggestion would be go to the Malware section and read the top thread/Announcement in RED and then post the requested logs.

maybe I worded this wrong. I'm not sure what was on the laptop. I ran a full scan with MSE and removed the threat. Then I ran a full MBAM scan and removed all 188 items found. Re-ran both scans and found nothing more. But the office files are still just symbols.

It is your choice. Bet that there is more on there that those 2 programs don't scan for.

You posted in the right place to start with for office problems. But it looks like you have Malware so that is why we suggested to post there.

Everything else seems to be good. Only the office files are bad. Tried what Microsoft forums said to no avail

Keep getting message, "The file you are trying to open, '*****.xls' is in a different format than specified by the file extension. Please verify that the file is not corrupted and from a trusted source before opening the file. Do you want to open the file now? YES NO HELP" If I say yes then I get a gibberish mess. Help went nowhere.
