Hello everyone...brief synopsis here. Have a newer PC with Windows 7 on it. I decided to install Office 97 as I was waiting on a copy of Office 2010. I installed Office 2010, and went to uninstall Office 97 and can't get it off. I have the CD and the uninstall program just locks up on me. I in turn uninstalled Office 2010 and wanted to reinstall in an attempt to overwrite 97, but now the Office 2010 install freezes up on me as well. Help!

Hi tgk111, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Sounds like you have a real mess of a problem on your hands. So right now just so I'm clear you only have Office 97 installed correct? If that is the case then lets make sure Office 97 is completely removed from your harddrive before you attempt to install Office 2010.

Having multiple versions of Office installed can cause a few problems to lets see if we can completely remove Office 97 first. Since the uninstall program locks up on your computer then we will have to find a different way of uninstalling Office 97.

    Try following these steps:

    1. Download the portable version of Revo Uninstaller. (Its at the very bottom of the download page)
    2. Save the folder on your harddrive.
    3. Once the program has finished downloading locate the zipped folder, right click it and select Extract all.
    4. After the folder has been extracted open up the folder and locate the revouninstaller.exe program.
    5. Launch the program and locate the Office 97 entry.
    6. Highlight the entry and select Uninstall.
    7. Follow the steps in the Wizard and make sure that you delete all files and registry entries that are found for Office 97.
    8. After the removal process finishes reboot the computer.
    9. Once the computer reboots go ahead and install Office 2010.

Let me know if the above process works or not.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

Thanks, unfortunately no luck. The program no longer shows on the list in Revo, but Office 2010 install still freezes about 2/3 of the way through and says that "Office Professional Plus 2010 Setup has encountered an error..." Not sure why I was able to get it on before but not now. Just to let you know all of the steps that got me here...

    1) Installed Office 97
    2) Installed Office 2010 (with 97 still on the computer)
    3) Attemped to uninstall 97 using install software (with no luck)
    4) Uninstalled 2010 in hopes of getting all Office files off of PC
    5) Attempted to remove 97 again with no luck
    6) Attempted to reinstall 2010 in hopes that setup would allow me to write over 97 (with no luck)

    Thanks again.

Probably also worth mentioning that Excel 97 still shows on the computer and runs, but Office 97 does not come up on any screens to uninstall, etc. Also tried running Ccleaner...didn't help. Tried Clean Boot, didn't help.

Office 97 in not compatible with Windows 7 and should not have been installed. Your UAC (User Account Control) is now broken and will require editing the registry to fix it.

MS does not list Office 97 as "incompatible" but instead recommends upgrading and using a newer version of Office because Office 97 is no longer supported by MS. More info.

This MS tool may or may not work but worth a try:
Utility to completely remove remaining Office 97 files and registry entries

Any idea on an easy fix for the registry? The 97 Removal Tool unfortunately doesn't work on anything after Windows 2000. What a mess.

Try following the instructions in this link, How to Completely Remove Microsoft Office 97.

Since the UAC settings aren't working properly either try following the instructions in this link, You cannot change User Account Control (UAC) settings on Windows 7.

Another option you can try is to perform a System Restore and restore your computer to an earlier time before you installed Office 97. Hopefully by restoring your computer to an earlier time you will be able to install Office 2010 and Office 97 should be removed from the computer. To access System Restore click Start< All Programs< Accessories< System Tools< System Restore. See if that will work.

IF IF and only IF you cannot change UAC settings then use the FIXIT.
