    Justin! Smile!

Justin I say this to you with a warm and friendly smile!
As I would say to a friend as joke with him! You are my friend in fact!

    Justin!!!!!!!!

I knew you were uncomfortable doing these things! I basically thought you were somewhat intimadated by Win2K Server! When you asked me how to format a dos disk! It hit me between the eyes!

I Don't know the British sense of humor! BUT!

Do you mean to say that I talked someone that cannot even format a DOS disk through complex BIOS, hardware and OS trouble shooting that even had I been there would have not been easy!

    DAMM I'm good!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    LOL,LOL,LOL

Excuse me Mr. Admin! I could not help it!

    OK justin just kidding! OK?

Now I think you have a handle on it and can probably proceed from here! But I will be here if you need!

You stiil did not undersatand about the slaveed CD! You said you will handle it after the install. Well what if after you do all the work and it give problems and conflicts? Start again from scrarch??? The time to do it is before you install server, but it is probably to late as you probably have gone on! You may get lucky and have no problem!

    Let me know!

    Your friend,
    Mike

    I'M ANGRY, VERY, VERY ANGRY

I've just spent ten **** minutes typing a reply, I click preview and the blasted thing has lost the lot :( :( :(

    Anyway.....

I'm back up, Systems well(for now)

IDE controller - I'm gonna risk installing this at a later date, probably next week, if the system goes pear-shaped then I can't say you didn't warn me.

    Regarding the DOS thing....

It was this bit that confused me from below, from a previous post:
I used to use DOS a lot when I was a young man but I haven't used it in such a long time that I've lost my grasp of it, apologies. :D

I was thinking of purchasing a copy of Drive Image 2002 - Although, I've read a lot of very bad things about this at
    Download.com > Drive Image 2002

Is it really as bad as these people make out?? Is there an alternative piece of software??

I'd like say thanks ever so much for your dedicated help and commitment so far, I appreciate it greatly.
No computer = No Money = No Life

    Regards

    Justin

    Justin!

Glad you are not angry with my jest!

Get Drive Image, I have used it for years several versions and now have 2002! Never had a problem!

But you know what! I have never istalled it as a windows application because for my purposes the resuce disks do everything I want! Imaging and restore! If you crash you will have to restore from a floppy anyway or at least reinstall windows enough to reinstall Drive Image windows so why bother!

I have however used it in windows as an application where it is installed by by someone else.

Another tip! On any program if you don't need it don't intall it! This is especially so of Win2k Server that is used as a server not as you use it. In anearlier message I used MS Office as an example of a program to put on another drive! Example only! Somebody better have a very goo reason to put that on any server I administer! That is a workststion program. Now it is OK to store files from MS Office.

I like drive Image! Some have a problem with everything!

I have never had a problem with Drive Image nor PartitionMagc!

Partition Magic would prepare the HD you have now for dos with fat32 ready to go without FDISK if you had it!

But Partition Magic would not work after Server is installed!

    In closing!

How ever you do it I hope you use my advice about multiple partitions!

    Keep everything OS on c:

    Keep applications on another drive!

And try to make a near perfect image to save for restore if something bad happens! If you do it this way this Image will be the beginning instead of a start from scratch. Drive image will restore in 5-10 min!

If you want send me your direct email and we can stay in touch! I plan on vacationing in the UK in a couple of years or so! Maybe you can buy me a beer!

    Hello,

Sorry, been away for the weekend at a friends.

Hope you had a good weekend.

****, I should of listened to you. I went out and bought an IDE controller card yesterday, I fitted it and linked everything up but I couldn't get back into windows because it was giving me an 'inaccessible boot device'..... So anyway I followed your advice and reinstalled windows and everything is hunkydory so far. :D :D

I've got my speed back which is good.

Drive Image 2002.... I tried to install the demo, but it doesn't install on Win2k Server, I don't think it works on the full version. Any ideas??

    Many Thanks

    Justin

    Hi Justin

I don't know what limitations the Demo ver has! Never used it!

Justin I come from so far back, that I used an OS called CPM before Mr. Gates made his famous trip to IBM and hardly anyone knew about Microsoft!

So if I can use DOS that is my first choice in a specialized utility!

I have used it where someone else has installed it in Windows but since the dos rescue disks do all that I need or want from it that is all I have ever used!

I will guess this is one of the things missing from the demo!

As to if it will install on server, never noticed anything in documentation but wasn't looking. But the dos rescue disks do because I Image my Office Server at least once a month with the disks!

I would buy it, it has a rebate now I think! Final price about 40.00 US.

As to the problem with the controller, I thought you might but hoped not! I suggest you print all the messages I sent study them refresh your understanding make yourself a checklist and do it slowly and purposely! If you do so now and later have a problem, this will be the beginng instead of a full from scratch install!

Of course by now you can do that in your sleep right! Beginning to get hooked on it. kind of like it huh! LOl, LOL!

    Hello,

I completed a re-install last night following your guide, partitions etc.

My friend has made me some Drive Image DOS disks, he never told me he had Drive Image :)

Ok, I've got the disks, what's the next step to make an image in DOS??

Also.... don't laugh, how do I make a bootable floppy again?? :D

    Thanks

If he made the drive image rescue disks then the 1st one is a dos boot disk!

boot from the 1st disk it will ask for disk 2! Then you will be able to image!

Remember to use compression to make the image smaller! Since you are in dos you cannot image directly to CD so put image on say drive e:! After you boot back to win2k you can copy it to a CDR!

I am on my way out to work but am traveling today so I will not be at my office or home so may not get to log back on to BBS untill this evening!

    Good luck!
    Mike

OH wait! You mean to prep! To fdisk and format! The Drive image disk won't do this it has a ver of DR Dos! Due to time limitations for me at this moment the best answer here is find someone who has win98 put disk in a: go to my computer rt click go to format do full and system files then from windows\command copy both fdisk and format to the disk!

Then to test while there, shut downand reboot with that disk in the a: drive! It should reboot to the a:

I thought you reinstalled last night! If so the Drive image disks is all you need unless you are going to start again from scratch!

Did you make the additional partitions c-f as we talked about!

If you did just boot from the first rescue disk and make the image over to 1 of these drives!

If you did not make the partitions as instructed then you have no place to put the image!

You must have at least 1 other partition to create and store the image on! It can not place it on the same drive it is imagining!

    ??????????????????????

    Hi Mike,

Yep, I followed your instructions, bloody good ones too :)

    My drive layout:
    C - OS
    E - Applications
    F - Work
    G - Storage

    D - Other HD

Is it a case of putting the first rescue disk in the drive and rebooting, does it boot straight into Drive Image DOS??

    Thanks

    Justin

    Yes Justin!

The 1st disk boots up then asks for the second disk!

Then drive image is up! Pick the drive you want to image tell it to use compression then tell it what drive to put the image on!

    But wait!

Something is wrong here! Your drives are out of sequence!

Should be cde on 1st drive f: on second drive! It will work but is not the way to do it!

This happend because you formated the second drive as a primary partition should only have 1 primary! To correct remove the partition on this drive and redo as an extended partition!

    Only the second drive!

After you do this it will be f: and all the drives will align properly!

I am off to work! Will try to check back in an hour or so from work!

    Hi Mike,

Ok, I'm in business - I have a compressed image of my C(OS) drive on CDR now :D:D - Drive Image is pretty **** good

I've installed Win2k SP3, I will complete another image in a moment then continue in the method you wrote out.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Also..... I've posted this problem in another forum http://www.WindowsBBS.com/showthread.php?threadid=9863&goto=newpost
Not sure if you can help on this or not.

Thanks again Mike you're a diamond.

    Hey Mike..... An interesting development.......

I made an image of the drive as asked, I then updated and added Win2k SP3. All seems fine, machine working ok and then I shut it down for the day and I boot it up this morning and I'm receiving the old blue screen errors again, I had to reboot 5 or 6 times to get back into windows.

I've copied the drive image from a CDR back onto a storage drive so i can restore this.

I tried to do it straight from CDR, my CD drives were not showing though, not sure if this was possible or not.

    Thanks

    Justin

    Ah Haa

This is the very reason for the Imaging step by step! Now you need go no farther back than the Image!

I suggested in one of my messages that you should leave the image on the HD for a while for this reason. You should have space!

No you are correct no CD access from the boot/rescue disks!

So reverse the process restore the image! BUT FIRST!

Now if everything worked before SP3! We need to try to make this work with sp3 if possible!

So reboot this sp3 and see if it will come up in safe mode! If so clear the logs! Then reboot again in FULL mode! If it locks up BLUE SCREEN, reboot and go to safe mode again! Now save the LOG FILES then try to cut/paste them in a message to me!

You may restore and not use SP3 and be OK but there may be some fix here you need. It may bite you later!

But for sure if you have the image you can allways try it later if needed in safety!

I would not decide to not use sp3, untill we at least look at the log files! It could show up as an easy problem to fix!
