    Hi Mike,

Sorry systems been down, I reinstalled server again just for testing purposes, ie. bad install. Still receiving the IRQ 11 problems.

Although, I noticed what you said about that they can share IRQ's - I went into devive manager and noticed that none of the hardware sharing IRQ 11 had conflicts, problem somewhere else maybe??

    What do you think??

    Thanks again

    Justin

    Hi Justin

Leaving for work now! 8:10 am!

But in answer to your ?

    A definate YES!!!!! Other problems!

Explain irq 11 problem now! Bring me up to date!

This has to be the HD controller issue!

You had to disable UDMA! Is your HD a Ultra DMA Drive! If so do you have a standard IDE cable or the correct UDMA cable?

It will run with std cable but you cannot have UDMA activated in BIOS! Which seems the case!

You should have the correct UDMA cable and activate UDMA to get full speed and benifits of UDMA!

So tell me about that also!

I have another Idea to help you easier and faster!

I have to go now, but will contact you from work in 1.5 hrs or so!

In mean time get me more details as to exactly what is going on now and about the cable!

    Mike

    Hi,

This is the current IRQ list on my system:

System Information report written at: 01/10/2002 15:06:46
    [IRQs]

    IRQ Number Device
    11 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
    11 NVidia Riva TNT2
11 VIA USB Universal Host Controller
11 VIA USB Universal Host Controller
11 Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
11 Creative SB Live! Basic (WDM)
11 Realtek RTL8139(A) PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
    14 Primary IDE Channel
    15 Secondary IDE Channel
    8 System CMOS/real time clock
    13 Numeric data processor
    6 Standard floppy disk controller
    4 Communications Port (COM1)
    3 Communications Port (COM2)
    12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse
1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard

Not too sure about the UDMA thing, my friend bought me the drive so I've emailed him to find out, i'll let you know what he says.

Although..... I noticed something, i I added a CDRW about two months ago, it's a 40x write but I noticed that when I used it my whole system would grind to an almost halt, any links between this and the IDE problem?? Speed of the cable maybe??

Thanks yet again for all your help

    Justin

YES! This CD/CDRW could be an issue in your slow down when you are up! And could effect the boot process now!

You still did not tell me what the current problems are when you boot!

Justin we need to take one thing at at time!

I don't need the irq list now unless it has an error or conflict!

Justin understand this: IT DOES NOT MATTER THAT SEVERAL DEVICES ARE SHARING THE SAME IRQ! IT DOES MATTER IF THEY ARE IN CONFLICT!

The last 2 times you have gave me list of irq assigments but have not told me yet if any are still in conflict! I know they were a day or 2 ago! How about now!

Now if you get some message when you boot about an IRQ problem but windows still says it has no confilct we will have to approach that problem differently! I need to know this!

If windows reports no problem with the IRQs in control panel, ie no conflicts then tell me the symptoms of each problem that you see when you boot!

We must get it to boot correctly before moving on to the other problems, that I believe will be easier than this to deal with!

Now as for the UDMA! We know the MB has on board UDMA because you have a setting to turn it on or off!

And if you still have the case off read the lable on the HD! If it does't say anything about UDMA then get me the name and model and I will find out for you!

The UDMA cable is harder for me to describe but it looks like a standard IDE cable except it has more wires(80) that are finer and smaller as compared to a standard cable that looks coarse in comparison!

If you have the correct cable then we do not want a slower device like a CD slaved on that cable! Some pci slot controllers can handle different speeds on the same cable, others can not and some just slow down to the speed of the slowest device! The fastest CD is still dma33 I think! For sure it is nowhere near the speed of even a slow HD! This may in fact be your slow down problem when you were up! THIS APPLIES TO A SEPERATE CONTROLLER! Most MB controllers as you have are usually specifically ether 133 100 66 or 33 and will have problem with mixed speed devices!

Do you have a seperate std CD or is this your only CD! If you have both then for trouble shooting disconect the CDRW leave only the std!

Also tell me how both CDs are connected as a slave or is it on the secondary master on the MB? Or is one slaved and one on the secondary master on the MB! Tell me which is which!

So here is what I need!

    1. only the IRQs if in conflict!

    2. Description of boot up errors!

    3. Name model of HD! Or read the label for the type (UDMA)?

    4. Try to determine the cable type. IDE or UDMA!

    5. Do you have a std CD and a CDRW?

    6. How is it/they connected? Slave, master etc. Tell me about both even if you disconnect the CDRW!

Justin I told you I will stick with you thru this. I realize you make your living with this computer. If I could be there it would be easy for me! But I cain't be there so we must depend on messages so try to slow down and reread my messages!

I know there are better diagnostitians than me, I just haven't met them myself. I have been there done that to many times! It is just much harder this way by messages so hang in there!

I know there are people reading our progress and they would help if we were not already on the correct path!

OK! Guys jump in if you have any ideas or help to offer! Maybe someone can explain something to justin better than I have!

Now get back to us with the info!

    Hang in there!!!

    Mike

PS Justin! Lot of info here maybe to much in 1 gulp! reread it try to follow it. Ask if not sure!

    Hi Mike,

Ok, my friend let me know that it is actually a UDMA HD, I've also found out that I had a standard IDE cable and a UDMA one running, I went out a bought a UDMA cable, so I've now got two UDMA cables running.

The drives are setup like this.

    IDE 1
    Main Hard Drive MASTER
    DVD-ROM SLAVE

    IDE 2
    Hard Drive 2 MASTER
    CD-RW SLAVE

    Is this a good setup??

Regarding the conflicts... then there are none as far as I know. There are only the devices that are sharing IRQ 11, but you say this is ok, so I'm going with you on this one.

I've not received any 'blue screen' boot up errors for a while, it goes straight into Windows no problem, although I still get the problem where you reset the system it sometimes just turns the fan on and that's it, then a manual reset is required.

Hope this is enough info for you??

I'm packing up shop for today so I will get back to any of your future messages tomorrow morning.

    Thanks yet again

    Justin

Looks like the bootup and even the init of windows is fixed!

I am not sure about the power on problem. Try Holding the button in for at least 5 seconds! If this don't work try poping it quickly and see if it comes on! Could be a bad switch! But look in BIOS in power managnent and look for power on and off settings.

I reccomend that you get another basic IDE controller for the CD that is slaved on the HD cable!

Most MB onboard controllers set at a flat speed of 100 or 66 etc. Some, most, do NOT support multi speeds! Find out from your MB mfg!

Now! And understand this! Some of the ones that do, slow down to the slowest speed of the slowest device! So this could slow a DMA100 HD down to DMA33! In addition it could cause other problems later!

If you are going to do another install it would be better to put in the contrller first and let install find it.

Now confirm to me that you have all hardware installed and working!

Now the info to slowly and carefully install the items that you want are in the other messages print them and study them!

Do all the drives first fdisk format etc.! Then OS basic generic all sound and CDs recognised and working. Install nothing else! Clear the event logs reboot and recheck them and IRQs for any problems then if OK! Do image of c: to your last drive.

Here is something new! Download the Win2k SP3 and install now before advanced features or any of your software! After SP3 clear and reboot and recheck event logs & IRQs if OK do another image!

Then begin installing any other features of Win2k you want a couple at a time. When they look good and the events and irqs still look good, image again! I usually overwrite the last image each time as long as you know it is clean!

Finally begin installing your application software that you use for web design and printers! Then image! Move on image!

Finally everything is as perfect as you can get it keep the image on the last drive and copy it to CDR also!

If you take the time to do this now and have that image, if you mess up something later this is as far back as you have to go!

    OK time for bed here!

Let me know how it goes!

    Mike

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

Ok, I'm gonna go for the re-install and partition my drive in the fashion you recommended. You mention making an image, what do i use for this??

    Thanks

    Hi Justin

    At work now 9:50 am!

Power quest Dive Image if you can! Its the best I think!
Make the dos rescue disks and use them to do it all! Don't even install the windows application. You can browse the CD and make the rescue disk without installing the whole program!

    Use the compression option!

    Do you understand?

Also what about the slaved CD and another IDE controller?

Hope you can get it! If someone has it all you need to do everything is the 2 disk rescue set!

    Hi,

I've spoke to my friend and the company where he works have a copy of Drive Image, so i'm going to get him to do DOS disks for me.

I presume the process is like this:

    1. Format and partition drives
    2. Install basic windows 2000 server
    3. Make image
    4. Install SP3
    5. Add extra Win features
    6. Make image
    7. Install Web stuff, Office, Install printers etc
    8. Make image
    9. Burn Image

This is basically reiterating what you've said previously, can you confirm this is the correct procedure??

    Thanks again

    Justin

Yes those are the basic steps!

    Just remember!

Begin with dos and fat32 not ntfs! We add that later if you want!

After you install anything and it comes up clean no errors that you can see as it boots, then clear the events, reboot even again and check the events for errors and for irq conflicts!

The reason you clear the events and reboot is to see a clean list of events so if an error is there we stop and handle it before we go on!

This should be done after each new step! Before we image! We do not want to image an error!

What about the slaved CD and other controller?

    Boot from Dos boot disk!

Run fdisk. Clear all drives and parts. create new primary part that is 25% of your totlal HD size!

Create an extended part from all of the left space (75% of your HD). Then the logical drives split into 3 so that all are about the same size.

    After FDISK! Format c: /u/s
    Format d: /u
and same for each other Drive letter (no /s except on c:)

When you finish this you should be able to boot to c: drive c:\

Then set CDROM to boot and install Win2k and keep fat 32

!!!!!!!! What do you plan for the slaved CD ??????????

On a win95/8 machine format with system make sure to copy FDISK and Format to it!

Maybe your friend can do it, make for you!

You do not have to do it this way! It is only a recomendation from me and is the way I would do it!

As the Slave! I would get it done now so the 1st install will see it!

It is part of your slow down problem with the CDRW!

After you put in another controller you should be able then to reenable UDMA to get full speed back on your HD!

Again only my suggestion! If you shortcut now after all this, it may bite you later!

    Your call!!!!

Don't get within sight of the finish line and slow down!!! Smile!!!!

    Ok Justin

    Have been to Lunch!

Just try to let Win2k do it all!

    Forget the dos and fdisk!

    Otherwise follow the steps!
