My aged PC is doing funny things. It's been randomly restarting itself when I am in the midst of some thing for a while now.

In addition this morning I get a screen telling me there's a ntfs.sys error. Never ever had this before. I have restarted again and all is well for now.

But what can I do about this?

Hi SarahB, Have you got your OS set to Auto Restart?

Right click MyComputer > Properties > Advanced > Settings under Startup & Recovery > Under System Failure > Uncheck Automatically Restart.

You will now be able to read what BSOD shows. Let us know what the message is. Neil.

    Hi Neil,
Thanks for the post. I have unticked automatically restart so it is now unchecked.

But I do not know what BSOD is or where to read it from! More guidance for this duffer is needed!

    Thanks,
    Sarah

Hi Sarah. An NTFS.sys blue screen indicates an issue with your hard drive or memory.

Lets start by checking your memory. Run Memtest86 and see if you have any faulty RAM modules.

    Please note:

To work around the above, test the installed RAM in various configurations. If you have a single module, swap it around the slots. If you have a pair of modules, run each one singly, swapping between slots; and then run them in pairs swapping between pairs of slots. If you have 2 sets of matched modules do not get them mixed up.

If your memory checks out then run Check Disk on the hard drive to repair any file system errors.

To do this click Start< My Computer. Right click on your hard drive and click on Properties. Then once the hard drive properties dialog box opens, click on the Tools Tab. Under where it says Error-checking click on the Check Now button. Ensure that both the Automatically fix file system errors and the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors checkboxes are both checked. After that is done click on the Start button. Check Disk will ask you to schedule the disk check when you restart your computer. Click on yes to do this and then restart your computer to allow check disk to run.

Commonly known as the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Now that you have set the computer not to restart on System Failure if there is a System Failure the computer will display the Blue Screen with error code and maybe the file which caused the issue.

Post Error Code and file name( if shown) here.

    Hello Peter & Terminator,
Thank you for your posts. My main priority has been backing up everything important that hasn't been recently in case PC dies!

Since I switched off auotomatic restart, everything has been behaving itself! Typical! But it is an intermittent problem so I expect it will happen again. So I'll report when it does.

I'm a bit worried about running the check disc as last time I did this on a PC, it never worked again! I've got new RAM which I've never installed yet so this might be the time to do it to upgrade from 2 to 4GB.

It's a while since I did any serious tinkering in the PC so I'm a bit rusty. Amazing how quickly one forgets how to do things!

Thank you all for your posts on this and apologies for not coming back to you sooner. My PC problems have been overtaken by serious family problems with ailing elderly parents. I will come back to this. Thank you for your anticipated patience.

    Peter,
Now that I have the auto restart switched off, when the error occurs the PC just freezes on the screen it is on. Then I have to restart manually. I don't get the BSOD or error code. When I originally got it (once only) it was a ntfs.sys error (don't have the code now).
I still haven't done the memory or drive check yet.

When you can test the hard drive with Seagate's SeaTools for Windows. Alternatively SeaTools for DOS (runs from a bootable CD - set CD as first boot option in BIOS if not already set) - I would normally recommend the latter, but as the PC boots up try the Windows version.

Test the memory using MemTest from a bootable CD or USB stick if your computer supports booting from USB (will be shown in boot order in BIOS if available)

Thanks for this Peter. I will get to it as soon as I can and when I think I have time as these things always take longer than one expects!

Strangely enough I haven't had the BSOD since that one time and now the auto restart is switched off the PC just freezes on the window where it would have restarted. Not very helpful as I get no error message.

More when I can.................... Thank you for your patience.

Finally I have an error message to report. The PC is still suddenly rebooting even though the auto restart is still switched off. This is the error message I have just got.

Could be related to memory, driver or something else .....

I suggest you run the mini dump (C:\DOCUME~1\Sarah\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERa56f.dir00\Mini110213-01.dmp) through our Dump Data Collection Tool and post the output log here.
