    hi mike

and it's difficult to downplay real world experiences. in so many instances, we want to and have to rely on them more than whatever other info is out there.

but i liken it to not having to personally leap from a tall building in order to know that it's something i don't want to do. (okay, a slight stretch, but i had to make the point... <g>)

i happen to believe that there are many many thousands of happy, satisfied norton antivirus users out there who are simply no where near as vocal as the folks who are getting jammmed up using symantec software.... consequently what tends to get posted to message boards the most is people knocking the software. this is not to say that your experiences are invalid or somehow not true or important. but you just don't see people going out of their way to post how well things have been going.

it's a lot like a toothache, mike. when your teeth feel fine, do you ever tell anyone? somebody asks how you're doing... you say, ah man, my teeth feel good. not. but if you have a toothache, then you feel compelled to talk about it.

another BIG plus i want to mention in norton's behalf is their removal tool catalog. where is the AVG removal tool list? i think you'll admit that when AVG users get in trouble and need a removal tool, they often run over to big daddy norton's house for help, cause they sure don't find it at the AVG site.

i just think that it is dangerous for folks to make decisions on what AV tool to use predicated on whether or not it has ever let a virus slip through to date. (i am not quoting you here.) if you can stand one more analogy.... i liken this sort of logic to uninstalling the driver and passenger's airbags from your car because so far, you haven't been in an accident.

and it is for precisely these reasons that i feel it's imperative (or at least valid) to look to places other than real world experiences.... like lab tests by reputable, non-profit entities... to point me at the very best security layers i can put in place.

    :)
