Thanks. Will register cleaning tools identify keys and tags that have no corresponding programmes etc.? I remember on an older PC using something called First Aid which picked up this sort of thing - only the automatic repair generally didn't work and you had to use the programme to find and delte the bits manually!

    Yes they should.

I have found the best one for that to be Norton WinDoctor which is the only part of NSW that I still use. But even with that ( and others ) I have gone back with a manual check and found some that they missed.

It will also find keys to programs that have been moved. And also finds the new location.

I do not know of another program that will do that.

    re: vxd conflicts?

My Norton 2003 disc installation has been a headache since i got it in Sep 2003. It does everything fine, but scan.

I had no problem with NAV in years before, so this is new to me.
However, i am having similar problem as stated in quote below from posts.

I keep getting a scan error with NAV at the Windows\System file by the Vmm32.vxd file. I have seen an error msg or two saying something about a .vxd file, so this has to be a conflict with Win98se and NAV 2003. I even tried to scan online but stops at same place, so some kind of problem with .vxd's....

I too have not had much help from symantec techs. I did all the obvious maintenance, safe mode boot, etc. as well as uninstalled and re-installed, according to directions.
I could have just subscribed online but prefer to have the disc installations, feeling they are better to do and have.
Between latest Symantec and Microsoft bugs in their updates, i am upset.

I am not sure i ought to change anything yet in my registry like you say as i am not much of a tech in that area. I have done only small "for sure" changes there.
If you have heard back from symantec on what the function of their .vxd is, please post it here. If you find out why it is conflicting with other .vxd in Windows\System, please post too.
    ----------------
quote here taken from first post on this subject: "
"Symantec has been of no help whatsoever, and my ticket is still open.

But, in MY troubleshooting, I found that it was the SYMTDI.vxd service that was now loading at boot time. And, it was conflicting with "something ".

I went to Regedit and deleted the entry of this file in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
    entVersion\Shared DLLs

    And also in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic
    es\VxD

I just did the register process and it went fine for me (thanks, I forgot).

The rest of NAV seems to be working fine. When Symantec support finally choose the talk to me again, I will explain what I have done, and "try" to get them to explain the function of this VXD, and what potentially problems I may have by not loading it. "
