Thinking about coming out of the cave and buying an E Reader. My spouse has a NOOK and just loves the thing. However, I read all the blogs and it appears that Barnes and Noble is looking to spin off the NOOK device. Also, ITWORLD.COM sez it B and N has stopped selling hardware for the NOOK. I cant read books on the computer and all I buy is tech books.

So looking for some thoughts from everybody on the E reader world--especially if you are a NOOK person.

    thanks

Don't know anything about NOOK, but my brother and his wife uses Kindle & Kindle Fire, and they like them very much. Be prepared to pay extra for a charger because they are considered optional equipment from what I've read. Maybe eBay would be a good place for a charger.

Windows 8.1 has Kindle as an App. I personally wouldn't want to spend my time reading books on my comp - but it is possible.

I find a tablet more useful overall, so I went with a Nexus 7. Android has a kindle app, so I'm good there :)

I have an older Kindle Touch, black & white display. These screens are the best for reading. Newer devices have color screens but are not as good in all lighting conditions. I don't need an HD display for book text.

But the advantages of the newer devices are many: Web browsing, email, entertainment, etc. I use my comp for those things and the Kindle just for reading books.

I ended up getting the Kindle paperwhite.. Pretty happy with it. Clearly, the screen size is smaller than the NOOK screen, but I 'm happy with the performance and it does have a web browser

Does the Kindle Paperwhite have a backlit screen?

I have one of the early Kindles and love it. We travel a lot in our motorhome, and taking the 8-ounce Kindle sure beats hauling a 100 pounds of paperbacks!

I don't treat it as yet another computer "thingy ", but simply as an alternative to paper books. I don't care if it isn't color, can't access the internet or do anything other than what I bought it for. It's an electronic alternative to going down to the library!

So I take it that the Kindle Paperwhite is illuminated so a person can read it in the dark? (at least it looks like I saw a lady reading one in the dark at lj's, Amazon link.)
