    If I go and purchase a full version of Windows XP, would there be a chance that the data can be saved? I have to check with the owner of the computer first before I restore.

    In theory, repair installation should touch any data, but it's always a good idea to back them up.
    Besides, repair installation not always works, so you may end up with clean installation anyway.
