I just purchased a tax program and cannot get it to open/run. The computer tells me there is "no media" in the CD player. Tried several other discs with the same result. I updated to Win 10 in Sept and I think this is the first time I tried to use the CD player. spook

Without knowing your System Details it is impossible to be specific here, but the first step is to check out Device Manager > DVD/CD-ROM drives. Is the drive shown and if so is there a warning triangle against it?

Please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions!

There is no triangle next to CD Rom Drive in Device Manager. When I click on the drive it tells me it is working properly. I updated my System Details

I suspect that the drive may be faulty, i.e. it is not detecting the media possibly because of a faulty laser. The fact that Windows states that the drive is working properly is misleading - it implies that the driver is loaded, but does not reflect the mechanical state of the drive.

Assuming that this is in a desktop (see below) I suggest you blow out the drive with compressed air to remove any dust which may be obscuring the laser and check the cables connecting the drive to the motherboard.

You missed out the final step to have your System Specifications listed ......

User CP > Edit Options > Thread display options > Show System Specifications - select 'Yes' from the drop down list. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and Save Changes.

Hi spook, W10 has Troubleshooting accessed through Control Panel. It can check through Hardware and Sound and will advise course of action required.
It may be just a simple matter of Uninstall in Device Manager and Shut down and then boot up again for Windows to re-install drivers.
Do a Shut down as opposed to a Restart. ;) Neil.

Where did you do this at? Don't see anything that indicates that you did it. Did you save it when you finished?

From the Windows Media Player site ....
Regardless the CD/DVD content should be shown in File Explorer when a disk is inserted and WMP is not needed for data disks.

But "DVD playback" typically means the ability to play pre-recorded DVD movies. No special software should be needed to "run a program" versus play a movie, in Windows 10.

And to be sure we are on the same page, the tax program in on a "DVD" while spook keeps saying "CD" player. While I assume he means DVD player, I think we need to verify it really is a DVD player and not a CD player.

Without any disk in the drive, if you double click on Computer on desktop , do you see the drive? If so, insert your tax disk. After a few seconds, you should see that the disk has been recognized. If it hasn't, double click on it. If still not, then try a different disk. If still no luck, then it appears the drive is bad. I would make sure all the cables are securely fastened. If so, then I think you need a new drive.
