    Well, in the early years entering a birthday in your BBS profile wasn't mandatory. Due to regulation changes in the US it's become mandatory.

    Just curious, why is your birthday mandatory?
    The government must be very trusting.
    Why can't I, say my birthday is 1\1\1980 but I don't want that showing so I use 2\2\1990
    How would the government know?
