Hello, I'm a new member here. I'm not that good at computers, though I have some knowledge. I hope you guys can help me. My comp got turned off and when I turned it back on, it doesn't have audio anymore. Everything seems to be fine though, drivers intact, sound card recognizes the device plugged in(tried both headset and speakers), volumes are at full, and the device manager doesn't display any abnormality. When I try to play music(or do anything that should make a sound, for that matter) I don't hear anything. The media player shows that the mp3 is playing, but it has no audio output. I tried playing games, and they seem to be working fine. There are no errors such as "no audio device found" and the like. The only problem is the audio output. When I try the directX diagnosis, I get this error:

DirectSound test results: Failure at step 19 (User verification of software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)

Can anyone please help me? :(

Hi Cephas, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

The first thing that I would check would be make sure that your audio is enabled in your computers BIOS. It sounds to me that the audio has been disabled somehow. When the computer first boots up and it shows the manufacturer company screen there is a button you have to press on the keyboard to enter the BIOS such as Del, F1, F2, F10. Once you get into the BIOS look under Audio and make sure the option is set to Auto and not Disabled. Once you set the option for the Audio device save changes to the BIOS and exit it.

If the computer still doesn't have sound after going into the BIOS then that indicates a possible driver issue or a hardware problem.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.

Thanks for the fast reply, and sorry for not replying as fast. I can't seem to find anything related to Audio in my BIOS. Either I missed something or I'm doing it wrong. BIOS is the one with the blue background right?

Yes. You pressed a key on the keyboard before you entered windows in order to access the BIOS correct?

There should be an option to enable or disable audio devices in the BIOS like I said in my first post. What is the name of your audio device?

Yeah, it says "Press Del to enter BIOS Setup" or something like that. These are the contents of my BIOS:
    Left side:
    Standard CMOS Features
    Advanced BIOS Features
    Integrated Peripherals
    Power Management Setup
    PnP/PCI Configuration
    PC Health Status
    MB Intelligent Tweaker(M.I.T.)

and then on the right side are the set password and the save/load thingies. I really didn't see anything related to audio there.

My audio device is Realtek High Definition Audio and it's built-in in my Gigabyte Motherboard.

Hi Cephas, you should find 'Audio' under 'Integrated Peripherals' you have to open it to see another list.

The only audio-related option there is Azalia Codec and it's already in Auto.

I am fairly sure that if the Audio device is functional it will appear in the Bios. This could suggest there is a problem with it. Can you give me the details of the motherboard.

Not sure if it will do any good but stranger things have happened, try uninstalling the drivers for the sound and re-installing them. It is just possible the drivers have become corrupted. You should be able to get the drivers from the manufacturers site if you do not have any.

    A suggestion.

Don’t know what system/hardware you have but:

Go to control panel – Sounds and Audio devices – Audio tab – and see what sound playback device is selected.

Onboard sound with Gigabyte is probably – Realtek HD Audio Output –
Else select either sound or graphics card if connected to that.

I reinstalled the audio driver and now I have audio again! Thanks so much for your help and suggestions. I appreciate the effort of everybody who cared to reply. I'll be checking these boards from now on just in case I can also help anyone who has less knowledge than me, though I find it highly unlikely for the time being. Again, I give thanks to everyone.
