    Hi rsdyrda,

    I'm happy that you figured out the problem, which turned out to be another internet program (Norton Internet...family edition) preventing IE and Netscape from connecting to certain sites. You were on the right track, trying to figure out what changes you made right before the problem began... glad it wasn't Netscape that was the culprit.
    I don't use the Microsoft System Configuration Utility, msconfig.exe (it didn't come with Win95) but I'm wondering if MSCONFIG exists on Win2000? Try doing a Find on msconfig.exe
    More on MSCONFIG here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q281965

    If you just want to get a quick idea of what's running, do a Ctrl/Alt/Delete and see what's listed.

    I'm mentioning it because you really should know what programs are running on your computer. As you found out, some running programs don't have an icon in the system tray.

    rsdyrda,

    You can get msconfig HERE for Windows 2000. It is an excellent utility, and one I wouldn't be without. As pointed out, I didn't take into account that you were running W2K. I run this utility on Windows 95 and 98SE, and it is invaluable. Not only does it let you control your startup, but it is a handy troubleshooting tool for problems such as yours.

    Hi rsdyrda,

    I did add the Win98 version of msconfig to my Win95 but just use it for informational purposes. I use another program called Startup Manager to actually disable different items, if I can't find a program option to disable automatic startup. I was already using that before getting msconfig and thought it best to stick to one program, otherwise, it gets too confusing!

    I did a little research since my last post and found out that you can add the WInxp version of msconfig to Win2K. If you search the Windows 2000 forum on either msconfig or startup you will find other suggestions.

    If you have the Spybot Search&Destroy spyware/adware removal program installed on your computer then you already have the tools to manage your startup. Open Spybot in advanced mode and go to the tools section. There you will find a System Startup item. You can view, disable or even delete different startups from there. Here is what the Spybiot S&D help file says:
    ============copy/paste=============
    System startup Tools
    This tool lists all programs that are started at Windows startup. If those items are in the database coming with Spybot-S&D, it will display some more information about them. It also allows you to disable (and enable) items, as well as delete them, change them or new items.

    On Windows 9x and ME, the user has full access to this list. On Windows NT/2000/XP, the list will display the global and the current user entries. For some functions like seeing all entries or even changing some, the user may need admin or power user rights.
    ===========end c/p==========

    If you don't have Spybot S&D or similar program installed then you should look into it. Just search on Spybot or browse through the Security/Virus/Spyware forum.
