Am planning on building a complete new system except for 500 Gb Sata II Seagate hard drive that I recently purchased. New system to include Asus M3A78 Pro mobo, AMD Athlon 64 X2 cpu, 4 Gb DDR2, psu and case. Already have Windows XP Home Edition (with latest updates) on HDD.
Can I simply connect this HDD in new system without problem or will I have to reformat or reload.
I don't have full version of XP. Upgraded from 98 which came with computer I purchased in 2001. Didn't have install cd of 98, only Cyberpower recover disk, which doesn't work any more because of BIOS upgrade.

I do believe you will have to reinstall the OS since it will neet to instlall the proper drivers for the new mobo.

How can I re-install XP if I don't have full install disk?

If the CD you have is an upgrade OS you should be able to do a repair install but i am not sure. You may need to purchase a full copy of XP.

Note to Moderator: Could you shed some light on this? I'm just not sure if an upgrade cd's repair install would work.

That's correct Mitch - an upgrade version of XP will work just fine for a repair install.

As always - good point Pete. I just assumed the old drive was an IDE drive and the SATA II would be added later but we all know how dangerous those kind of assumptions can be. Keep us posted lejoy.
