yes, even logged into it, but it doesn't ask me [for credentials] it shows me the shared folders when i click the laptop but still give me the error [not enough server storage] when i click the shared folder... never mind it's easier by e-mail or usb drive.

After thought: I haven't tried disabling comodo.... No, tried that, no cigar.

Are there any events listed in Event Viewer that shed any more light on this?

To open Event Viewer, go to Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc, click OK.

Check your Application and System logs for errors.

You can double click on any error for more details, and there is also a button to copy the error to your clipboard for easy copying & pasting.

Also: The problem is on the machine you are attempting to connect to, not the machine where you see the error message. On the computer you are attempting to connect to, check the event viewer for an event ID 2011.

Thanks a lot Arie, I tried it again this morning and it worked, I can access. I looked at the events on the laptop and there were quite a few errors with the ID 2011, probably from all the failed attempts. So I set the IRPStackSize to a higher value. Odd I didn't have to do that last time.
From the laptop I can see [JC-HP] icon in the workgroup, but when I click it nothing happens. Just seem to search and get lost... Had to leave, but will try some more later.

Just realized that with this setting I had no shared folders, so I shared the Movie folder and the laptop could access it right away.

Thanks again Arie. Issue resolve for me, hope this works for Jseabolt as well.

    Follow up:

I've tried everything mentioned so far but still nothing.

Same old same old. On my XP machine if I right click on my Vista computer under the network it says "Network path was not found "

My Vista machine still won't recognize any XP machines.

I'd really like to just install Windows XP on this computer and tried it installing it rather than messing around with this network issue.

But Emachine doesn't appear to support XP motherboard drivers for this particular computer. So it looks like I'm limited to using Vista or Windows 7.

Does your Vista user account has a password? I found that blank password are not allowed. Ounce I set a password it would then ask me for credentials, enter your Vista user name and password and check [remember my credentials].

That's one of the variations I have tried. I have a log-in password. Am I confusing log-in users and passwords with network users and passwords?

    Try this:

At a command prompt on the XP machine type net use \\vista machine IP address /u:vista account user name

    What prompts/errors do you get?

Also, do you have a firewall? If so, try switching it off & test again.

Have you tried rebooting your router? Try again & test.

    AH HA. Found something interesting.

I've got another PC I just loaded XP onto. Low and behold My Vista machine recognizes it and vice versa. And I can access files on my Vista machine with this XP machine and vice versa. I have to enter my name and password but it lets me in.

Another weird thing. For whatever reason I can now see and access files from this particular XP machine I've been having trouble with from my Vista machine. I'm not sure why it started showing up all of a sudden. But like before I can see my Vista machine but can't access it. Unlike my other XP machine.

So the problem is obviously with my main XP particular computer and not my Vista machine all along.

I punched in the following information in "RUN" under the start menu. A black screen pops up briefly and nothing else happens. Am I entering the correct information? The ID address comes from a website that "What's the IP? ". "James" is my log-in account name.

    net use \\ 76.7.134.141 /u: james

The only difference between these XP machines I can think of at the moment is the one I am having problems with is running AVG. I have it disabled on the other XP machine that "works" until my 512 MB RAM arrives.

Seems to me like it's some sort of firewall issue. My Vista machine has Norton 360 on it and I disabled the firewall on it and within Windows just to see is that had an effect.

    No, not exactly right.

First, you have to open a command window (Start > Run > cmd).

Then you need to find out your local IP address. So on the Vista machine, open the Network and Sharing Center, click on View status next to the LAN connection, click the Details... button, and note the IPv4 IP Address.

Then in the command window type net use \\IPv4 IP Address /u:james

note: there are no spaces between \\ and the IP address nor between /u: and the user name.

OK I entered the command exactly as shown but now all that happens is a black window appears and a flashing cursor "_ ".

I'm not sure what is going on. When this program first occured, I'd get the following when I would click on workgroup computers under My network places

: "The network path was not found "

Yesterday I got the following: "Login failure: the user has not been granted thr requested logon type at this computer ".

Today I'm getting the original error message : "The network path was not found" and my XP computer is not showing up under networks on my Vista machine.

This XP computer has the original operating system on it that was installed over four years ago. I just wonder if something has got corrupted between now and then.

I'd start by running sfc /scannow, or would do a clean install of that XP.

    Hi jseabolt,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

On the machine that has Norton 360, first make sure you have the latest version installed, which is "3.8 ". If you need to update to the latest version, as long as you have a valid subscription, you are entitled to free product updates for the life of your subscription. Please visit the Norton Update Center at the link below.

    Norton Update Center

After you have updated, or if you already have the latest version installed, please follow the instructions in the link below to configure the "Trust" relationships for the devices on your network.

Configure Media Sharing with Norton 360 version 3

Let me know if you need additional assistance with configuring Norton 360.

    Thanks,
    Mike

I tried that but it's requesting the "XP Home edition CD" which I don't have. All I have is the Emachine recovery CD that came with the computer and it won't accept it.

So I tried my "Windows XP Professional CD" but it won't accept it either. I did have a home edition at one time but threw it away the other day because after awhile it stopped working after 30 days. So I'll have to get a copy of the home edition before I can use the above command.

I would backup any data & start with a fresh install using the recovery CD.

If you do, make sure you get the latest Windows XP Service Pack.

Hi Arie, just thought I would let you know that since I applied the StackSize fix you suggested and put a password to the account on Vista the network sharing between my 3 machines [XP, Vista, Win 7] has been working great! Media, printer, file transfer all works just fine. Thanks again.

    Problem resolved!

I've been killing myself trying to solve this issue for some time but it looks like it was as easy as removing Norton 360 from my Vista machine and installing AVG version 9.

Now as to why it was affecting this one particular computer running XP and not others I'm not sure. The only thing different was the XP computer that couldn't access the Vista computer was running the home version where the other XP machines were running professional. All are on the MSHOME network.

Now I can access my Vista computer from my XP home computer. The only thing is I can only access the "Public" folders. Not the entire "C" or "E" drive but that's no big deal.

I also turned off password protection on my Vista computer.

    Maybe the combination worked.

But I seem to think the issue was with Norton 360's firewall.
