Hi Ramona, I just reviewed your "How to do a custom Install of Netscape 7.0 final" in anticipation of installing the program. I intend to keep my current NS 4.75 version while I try out the 7.0 release.
I noted that you suggest deselecting all of the components and then indicate you would install those programs yourself. Here's todays dumb question. After you install NS 7.0 without any component programs, where would you then get those particular program to install, and where would you install them? I'm not sure I would want all the components offered, but the following looked like they might be helpful or even necessary. Perhaps you could offer a little guidence in that area as well.

    Sun Java 2?
    Macromedia Flash Player?
    Viewpoint Media Player?
    HP Printer Identifier Plugin?

    Thanks.:)

BTW, I did download NS 7.0 from the FTP site....download took just under 5 minutes on Charter cable broadband and using Flashget download manager.:D

If I'm right, to add those components at a later date, you'd have to run the setup program again, choose custom install, and then add the components you unchecked during original install (very much like adding Windows components after org install in Add\Remove Programs)

    Hi washoe,

I see tranquilo has given you the links for the applications.

    Sun Java 2
You will need the Sun Java 1.4 plugin for Java intensive pages. It will keep your PC from crashing when you encounter such a page.

    Macromedia Flash Player
I install the program from their site. This way you will have a more current plugin than what is offered by Netscape.

    Viewpoint Media Player
This is not for me, as I am overloaded on Media Players. The more you have on your system, the more likely it is to have problems playing your media files.

    HP Printer Identifier Plugin
All this pluging does, is provide links to Netscape's print centre for printing hints or support. It really is superfluous.

Downloaded that mammoth program in 5 minutes! What is it with you broadband users anyway. Do you just really enjoy seeing an old lady drool, or what? ;)

Not at all, just offering 'motivational' facts. Remember, the older we get the less time we can afford to spend waiting for a DUN download :D :D

I suggest getting Streamlined Netscape 7.0 (13MB) instead. So you don't have to download the whole package (31.4MB) and reject all extras.

Howdy. Following Ramona's suggestion, after installing NS 7.0 by deselecting all components, I would then want to install the following components.

Do I install these in their own directories on C drive or in the Netscape 7.0 directory?

    Thanks :)

Oops, forgot to ask in last post:

I assume that the Java program I want is:

    Java(TM) Runtime Environment 1.4.0_02

    [Download J2SETM v 1.4.0_02 JRE edition]

    Hi washoe,

Netscape 7 should detect Java automatically. If not, you can add this line to your user.js file:
    user_pref( "plugin.scan.SunJRE ", "1.4 ");

If adding this line doesn't work, then you have to copy the java plugin files manually. For Java 1.4: Go to
C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.4.1_02\bin\ and copy the following files into your Netscape 7 plugins folder:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape 6\plugins\
    NPJava*.dll
    NPJPI140.dll
    NPOJI610.dll

Macromedia will install into the Netscape Plugin folder. After the install, open Netscape and click on the "Help" Tab, then About Plugins. You should see the plugin listed.

    HI washoe,

Just wanted to add my 2 cents :) in case you still need help.

On where to install Sun's Java:

Ramona's answer told you which files go where in Netscape's plugin folder in case you need to manually move them, but when I installed the JRE 1.4.0_01 with Mozilla 1.0 already installed, I didn't have to do a thing! All the plugin files were placed in the Plugin folder automatically.

About the installation directory, you don't want to install the Sun Java Runtime Environment into Netscape's folder! Let it install wherever it wants to go, for example, mine installed automatically to Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.0_01. Other JRE versions will be different. Details here:
    http://java.sun.com/getjava/manual.html

In case you didn't know it, Sun's Java can also be used in Internet Explorer. To do that you go to the Browser tab in Sun's "Java Plugin" tool in control panel. If you don't want to use Sun's Java in IE, make sure that Internet Explorer is UNchecked there.

Follow the "J2SE Downloads" link at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/jre/install-windows.html to " J2SE 1.4.0" to "Download J2SETM v 1.4.0_02" (the link will be under "JRE ") accept the terms and conditions, and you will finally get to the page telling you,
You have chosen to download Java(TM) Runtime Environment 1.4.0_02
    * Download j2re-1_4_0_02-windows-i586.exe .

On Macromedia's Flash Plugin, you should have the latest Flash 6 player installed (earlier players had a security flaw). You can use either Netscape 4.7x or Netscape 7 to download. When you do the install, you will be given the choice of which Netscape version(s) - when I installed SWFlash version 6.0.47.0 I selected Netscape 4.79 (en) and Mozilla 1.0 (en)

    Hi Alice

Your 2 cents was most helpful in pointing me to the exact location where I could download the correct Java 1.4 version. I was having a bit of a tussle trying to figure out exactly what it was I needed to download from that site. Your directions made it quite simple. Hopefully the installation will go just as well and I won't find it necessary to perform a manual install per Ramona's instructions.

Should I install Netscape 7.0 before I install the Java Runtime Environment 1.4 or can I install the Java program first? Also, any idea how installing the Java program might affect my current Netscape 4.75 since apparently some sort of Java component is present in NS 4.75 as I am able to view web pages with Java applets a/o Javascript and I am able to enable/disable Java in NS under the "Preferences|Advanced" options.

I also note that I currently have the plugin "NPSWF32.dll" [Shockwave Flash 6.0 r29] installed in my NS 4.75 plugin folder. Does Netscape 7.0 use that same plugin or would it be better to install a complete new version of the Macromedia Flash Player?

    Thanks :D

    Hi washoe,

It's your choice but I would wait until after Netscape7 is installed before installing Sun's Java. That way Sun's Java SHOULD install its plugins into NS7's plugin directory. Otherwise, if you already have Sun's Java installed and then install Netscape7, you may have to follow Ramona's manual install instructions. No big deal but you may as well wait, in my opinion.

In my own case, I already had Sun's Java version 1.3.1 installed and it placed it's plugins in my Netscape 4.78 folder. Then I installed Mozilla, which doesn't include any Java (you have to install it yourself, as you plan to do). The plugins were not copied to Mozilla's Plugin folder but Mozilla was able to use the ones in the Program Files\Javasoft\JRE\1.3.1\bin folder directly (I checked in "About Plugins "). Once I uninstalled 1.3.1 and installed 1.4, the new Java plugins were copied to Mozilla's Plugin folder automatically.

I'm not sure if you can use Sun's Java in Netscape 4.75. The 4.78 release notes say, " Improved support for Sun Java plug-in ". In either case, you would have the choice to use the Java Plugin or not, in Advanced preferences. Look for the option "Enable Java Plugin" right underneath "Enable Java (it will be greyed out) When I upgraded from 4.61 to 4.78 I was able to use either Netscape's internal java or Sun's Java, once I installed it. I was able to select the new option in preferences to use the Sun Java plugin. That option was greyed out before I installed Sun's Java.

On the Macromedia Flash , see http://www.windows-help.net/microsoft/swf-flaw.html
Your version 6,0,29,0 is subject to a security flaw! This was fixed in version 6,0,40,0 according to the above. Get the updated version. You will have to download it using Netscape then run the installer. You will need to install it again, online, using Internet Explorer because IE5.5sp2 and above need the activeX version.

I checked the copy I made of the About Plugins page when I first installed Mozilla, and Mozilla was using my Communicator\Program\Plugins\np32dsw.dll (Shockwave for Director) and \npswf32.dll (Shockwave Flash) olugins so, unless you plan to install NS7 soon, I would go ahead and install the Updated Flash player now, for security reasons. You see, Mozilla (and NS7) will search out plugins in other locations and will attempt to use them. , so it SHOULD find and use the copy in your Communicator plugin folder. If, for some reason, NS7 can't find it you can re-run the flashplayer6installer.exe or simply copy over the plugin.

Hi Alice. I think I'm making progress here. I should tell you that I am married to an Alice so taking direction from a namesake seems quite natural, although you are much kinder when I ask dumb questions.

It sounds like I would be better to install Sun's Java after the Netscape 7 install. However, not sure it is going to work with my NS 4.75 since the only Java options I currently have at Preferences | Advanced are: "Enable Java ", Enable JavaScript ", and "Enable JavaScript for Mail & News ". I do not have a "Enable Java Plugin "s, even greyed out. Perhaps that option is added after Java 1.4 is installed and the plugin is available in Netscape's plugin folder? Either way, it's not a concern since the built in Java works fine. I trust installing the new Sun Java would not disrupt that.

I took you advice and installed the newest Macromedia Flash Player, version 6,0,47,0 in both Netscape 4.75 and IE 5.5sp2. My "About Plugins" now shows: FILES\NETSCAPE\COMMUNICATOR\NETCAST\PROGRAM\plugins\NPSWF32.dll
    Shockwave Flash 6.0 r47,
    and in the:
    C:\WIN\Downloaded Program Files\Shockwave Flash Object: Properties are: [ 6.0 r47 v: 6,0,47,0]

BTW, it's curious that even after the new installation, in the "WIN\SYSTEM\MACROMED\FLASH" folder the properties for the two files therein are:
    Flash.ocx 6.0.r29 v: 6.0.29
    swflash.ocx 5.0.r42 v: 5.0.42.0

    Just wondering.

I think that I'm pretty settled on installing the "Streamlined" version of Netscape 7 although I am intrigued by the "Compact" version http://www.hmetzger.de/net7comp.html Ramona referenced because it apparently incorporates some the the latest Mozilla enhancements not available in Netscape 7. However in either case, I see that both you and Antony noted that Netscape 7 will automatically use all installed plug-ins that are installed in any older Netscape version. Because Netscape 7 will use all plugins installed before, and I guess it is important to remove any unwanted plugins manually before the NS 7 install. For me that would certainly include the Quacktime plugins. Are there any others that I should consider?

Also, as you have noticed before, my path to my current plugin folder in NS 4.75 is a bit odd:

    C:\Program Files\NETSCAPE\COMMUNICATOR\NETCAST\Program\Plugins

I'm wondering if a new Netscape install will find them at this location. At one point you thought that my Quicktime sorrows might have been because the install couldn't locate the plugin folder, although the Macromedia Flash install of today did.

Since I plan to keep my current NS 4.75 for the present, I'm wondering where (what directory) a new Netscape install should go? I would assume the default would be C:\Program Files\Netscape which would abviously be a conflict with my current NS program. Do you have any suggestion? I have a 'D' partition available but I'm not sure that would be advisable.
I know you run Netscape and Mozilla. I assume that eliminates any problem of running two versions of Netscape? Is that a better option?

Finally, does Netscape 7 automatically use a profile from an existing Netscape version? If so, does it give you option to select the profile? I currently have 4 profiles and I there is only one I would want to initially use with a new install.

I noted that you maintain the computers in your household so just consider all this another "taking care of Alice's husband's computer ". :D

    Thanks

    Hi washoe,

Sounds like Netscape 4.75 doesn't support the Sun Java Plugin - Ramona or one of the other Netscape experts would know better - but in any case it won't matter since with NS 4.7x you have to actively select the option to use it. No worries there, really.

On your odd path for Netscape 4.75, It is the Communicator program folder you mentioned was not "standard ". Your profile folder should be in Program Files\Netscape\Users\ "profilename" and Netscape7 or Mozilla will look there (or possibly in nonstandard locations also? Ramona?) to convert your profile. That will copy over your mail, newsgroups, settings, etc.

I only had one Netscape 4.79 porfile so I wasn't asked to choose. My guess would be that you will have to pick the profile to "convert" but iit is really not that big a deal to start fresh... in fact, when I went from Mozilla 1.0rc3 to 1.0.1 recently, I had problems using the carried over profile so I just created a new one. Not that hard., I copied over the files I wanted....Ramona has information on doing that on her Solutions page. http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns67cleaninstall.html

In fact, go through her entire Netscape7 section, whre it mentions in one of the links that the default location for the program install is the C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape7 folder, which answers one of your questions about the install path - no conflict that I can see! The Netscape folder will then have three folders: Communicator and Users (for 4,7x) and a new Netscape7 folder.

If for some reason the install doesn't locate your Plugins, follow the instructions Ramona gave earlier, to copy over the plugins you want to keep or check the link I gave you before, http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/windows.html

On choosing which version of Netscape, I'm the conservative type so I would probably not choose the Standalone or Streamline from http://sillydog.org/narchive/sd/70.html (sorry Antony!). If it were me I would download from Netscape, http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp, then choose the custom install and select only the bare minimum.
    Check Ramona's instructions, http://home.att.net/~cherokee65/index5.html

    Netscape's Installation instructions are here:
    http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/7/learnmore/installinstructions.pdf

Alternately, I would install Mozilla 1.0.1 which is the 'unadulterated' version of Netscape 7. Just my personal bias!

On your Shockwave files, I read that the flash ActiveX control had a name change in Flash6 and so did not overwrite the Flash5 file. This is from http://www.macromedia.com/support/flash/ts/documents/control_remove.htm
    My versions are swflash.ocx 5.0.42.0 (Flash5) and flash.ocx 6.0.47.0 (Flash6)

PS, Double-check that flash.ocx version you show in Windows\System\Macromed\flash... it should be the same as mine, 6.0.47.0 -
That's the version you should see when you go to the Macromedia test page, http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/welcome/ using Internet Explorer and place the mouse over the "About" button in the Flash Player box.

    Just wanted to add:

Hmetzger's Compact version of NS7 does look interesting! Saw this just now:
I just added the http referrer fix
    user_pref( "network.http.sendRefererHeader ", 0);
to my user.js file the other day. Details here:

Yes, check out that thread. Bottom line: NS7 Compact already includes the fix for the http referrer issue (considered a relatively minor privacy bug) but if you decide to go with another version of Netscape or Mozilla consider one of the workarounds mentioned there.

Yes, my Flash.ocx is version 6,0,47,0 and my swflash.ocx is version 5,0,42,0, the same as yours. I also checked at http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/welcome/ with IE and verified that version 6.0.47.0 - is indeed installed.

I thought so as well. I'm a bit disappointed he replaced Netscape Live Audio with the Beatnik Player Plugin and I just posted a question on the "Holger Metzger Posts NS 7.0 "Compact" Version" thread to see if Beatnik can be deselected during a custom install, assuming that the installation would find my current Live Audio Plugin (npaudio.dll).

I am still digesting the rest of your post which had some great information and did answer several of my questions. Thanks. :D
